Chapter 15 - BRIGHT HORIZONS

Two days later, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by media vans and reporters.
The trial of Victor Vance and his co-conspirators lasted exactly four hours.
Armed with the black ledger, the vintage music box audio recordings, and the surveillance documents recovered from the basement vault, the federal prosecutors presented an airtight case of RICO violations, corporate extortion, and targeted fraud.
When the federal judge banged his gavel, the verdict was unanimous.
Guilty on all counts.
Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
As Victor Vance was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs—his head bowed, his expensive gray suit rumpled and disgraced—he didn't even dare to look in our direction.
That evening, the Moretti estate felt completely different.
The heavy shadows of corruption and fear that had haunted the hallways for years were finally gone, replaced by warm light, laughter, and peace.
In the grand dining room, a celebratory feast had been prepared by Mrs. Gable.
Teresa sat at the head of the table, laughing as baby Elena—now wearing a brand new, perfectly finished yellow wool sweater—gurgled happily in her arms.
Sofia and her husband sat nearby, sharing quiet smiles of genuine happiness.
And at the other end of the table, Luca and I sat side by side.
“To new beginnings,” Luca said, raising his crystal glass of sparkling cider toward the table.
“To family,” Teresa beamed, raising her cup with a proud smile.
“To family,” we all echoed together.
Later that night, after the guests had retired and the house settled into a peaceful quiet, I walked out onto the stone patio overlooking the sprawling gardens.
The night air was cool and crisp, carrying the sweet scent of blooming spring flowers.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel behind me.
Strong arms wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest.
“You’re quiet tonight, Director Collins,” Luca murmured against my hair.
I leaned back into his embrace, smiling in the moonlight.
“I was just thinking about how far we’ve come, Luca.”
“From the kitchen archway to the foundation office.”
Luca turned me around slowly in his arms, his dark eyes shining with deep affection and undeniable love.
“You didn't just earn your place here, Hannah,” he whispered, his voice soft and husky.
“You saved us.”
He leaned down, his lips meeting mine in a gentle, lingering kiss that tasted like forever.

Overhead, the stars shone brightly across the Chicago sky, casting a golden glow over a family finally healed, safe, and unbroken.
