Chapter 5 - THE SEARCH FOR ELENA'S MOTHERThe extravagant engagement party was officially over. Within twenty minutes, forty-six wealthy guests had quietly evacuated the mansion, terrified of being caught in the fallout of a mafia syndicate war.

The grand banquet hall was empty except for Luca, Lucy, Marcus, and me.
Luca walked over to where Lucy and I sat. He knelt on the marble floor beside her chair, his expression heartbroken and tender as he looked into his daughter's tear-stained eyes.
“Sweetheart,” Luca said softly, taking her small hands in his massive, tattooed palms. “I am so sorry. For everything.”
“Are you going to send me away, Daddy?” Lucy whispered, her bottom lip trembling. “Because I'm not really a Moretti?”
Luca shook his head fiercely, pulling her into a gentle, protective embrace.
“Listen to me, Lucy. You are my daughter. Blood doesn't make a family; love and protection do. Nothing on this earth will ever change that,” he promised, kissing her forehead. Then he looked up at me. “Emma... did this woman—Elena’s mother—leave any contact information when she came to the gate?”
“No, sir,” I replied, shaking my head. “She just left on foot toward the metro station down the block.”

Luca stood up, turning to Marcus. “Check the city surveillance feeds along the western metro line from six months ago up until today. Find out where she lives. Bring her here tonight.”
“On it, Boss,” Marcus said, turning on his heel and heading for the security control room.
