Chapter 9 - The Safehouse Above the RailroadMarcus Vance dropped his datapad into the freezing mud, throwing his hands up in surrender as Barrett and two security operatives stepped out of the shadows, slamming steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

“This is an illegal detention!” Marcus screamed, his voice cracking with hysterical rage as he was shoved against the side of a diesel engine. “You can’t touch me! I have political immunity!”

Christian stepped out from beneath the gantry overhang, walking slowly toward his cousin through the falling sleet. He didn't rush. His footsteps were measured, heavy, and completely unyielding.

“You lost your immunity, Marcus, the moment you traded public service for industrial sabotage,” Christian said, his voice carrying clearly over the hiss of the locomotive brakes. “The federal marshals are waiting at the main gate. Enjoy your family reunion with Giles.”

As Marcus was dragged away toward a waiting federal transport van, Christian turned and walked over to the mobile dispatch van, pulling open the side door and stepping up inside out of the rain.

He shook the water droplets off the shoulders of his coat, looking down at me with an expression of intense, glowing pride.

“It’s over, Sarah,” Christian said softly. “The syndicate network is completely dismantled. The transit workers are safe, the pension funds are fully restored, and my family’s name has been cleared.”

I let out a shaky, triumphant breath, leaning back against my chair. “We actually did it.”

Christian reached out, taking my cold hands in his warm palms, pulling me gently to my feet until we were standing close together in the narrow aisle of the van.

“We did it,” he agreed, his silver-gray eyes searching my face with a tender vulnerability that contrasted sharply with the ruthless warlord who had just dismantled an empire. “And it all started because a tired night-shift clerk decided to spend eleven dollars and twenty cents to save an old woman she didn't even know.”
