Chapter 11 - The Syndicate Council's VerdictThe massive mahogany conference table in the central tower of Vance Maritime was bathed in the cool, blue light of dawn.

Seated around the table were the regional syndicate bosses, the top maritime security captains, and federal defense liaisons who had flown in on emergency orders from Washington.
At the head of the table sat Christian Vance, his dark suit crisp and immaculate, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute authority.
I sat directly to his right, reviewing the intercepted shipping logs and explosive inventory manifests recovered from the lighthouse reef tunnel.
Gabriel stood near the projection screen, tapping a remote to display the digital surveillance footage of the captured Sicilian mercenaries.
“The raid on the reef tunnel was a complete success,” Gabriel announced, his voice ringing clearly across the quiet room. “All illegal ordnance has been confiscated, the smuggling route has been permanently sealed with reinforced concrete, and the Sicilian operatives are currently being held in federal custody pending federal racketeering charges.”
A low murmur of approval rippled through the assembled syndicate bosses.
One of the senior regional captains, a grizzled veteran named Dominic Rossi who had served under Christian’s father decades ago, raised his hand and stood up.
“Don Vance,” Rossi spoke, his weathered face solemn and respectful. “The Sicilian syndicate has tested our borders for the last time. But the exposure of this conspiracy—and the recovery of the Genoese cartographic cipher—wasn't achieved by our tactical fleets alone. It was achieved by Miss Moretti.”
Every pair of eyes in the room turned instantly toward me.
A hot wave of self-consciousness washed over my cheeks, but I kept my chin held high, meeting their gazes with calm, unshakeable poise.
Rossi lifted his crystal glass toward me. “To Clara Moretti—the true architect of our survival.”
Across the entire room, forty powerful men stood up in absolute unison, raising their glasses high.
“To Clara Moretti!” the chorus echoed through the conference hall.
I felt a sudden lump form in my throat. I looked down at my hands, then turned my head to look at Christian.
He wasn't raising his glass. Instead, he was looking at me with an expression of such deep, undeniable devotion and pride that it completely took my breath away.
Slowly, Christian reached across the polished mahogany table, taking my hand in his large, warm grip, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles in front of every powerful boss and federal official in the room.
“Thank you, gentlemen,” Christian’s deep baritone finally broke the quiet emotional weight of the moment. “The council is adjourned. Clara, stay with me.”
As the syndicate bosses and federal liaisons quietly filed out of the conference room, the heavy oak doors closed behind them, leaving just the two of us alone in the expansive glass-walled penthouse.
Christian stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and pulled me gently to my feet, wrapping his strong arms securely around my waist.
“You dazzled them all, you know,” Christian whispered, burying his face in my hair as he held me close.
May you like
“I just did what had to be done,” I murmured against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.
“You did more than that,” Christian replied, pulling back just enough to look deep into my eyes. His emerald gaze burned with an intensity that made the rest of the world fade away. “You didn't just save my empire, Clara. You became its heart.”
