Chapter 12 - A Sanctuary on the Gold CoastBy late April, the transformation of their lives was complete.

The historic Rossi estate on Prairie Avenue had become a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and light.
The grand ballroom where the confrontation had taken place was renovated into a magnificent public gallery and music conservatory, its stained marble floor replaced with heated Italian terrazzo.
Clara had taken over the executive direction of the family’s philanthropic operations, overseeing forty community centers, healthcare clinics, and trade schools across the Midwest.
And every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, without fail, the long mahogany dining table was filled with family.
Don Salvatore Falcone would sit at the head of the table, laughing as he carved the prime rib, while Frank brought platters of handmade gnocchi and warm sourdough bread from the kitchen.
One sunny Saturday morning, Clara walked through the estate’s private rose garden.
The gravel paths had been cleared of winter debris, and the early summer roses were blooming in vibrant crimson clusters beneath the morning light.
Matteo stood by the marble fountain, holding the leash of a bounding, four-month-old golden retriever puppy that was joyfully chasing dry leaves across the grass.
When the puppy saw Clara, he let out a happy yip and bolted down the path, tumbling straight into her shins, wagging his tail furiously.
Clara knelt down, laughing as the puppy showered her face with enthusiastic, wet kisses.
Ruby ran across the lawn, tumbling into the grass beside her mother, wrapping her arms around the puppy's golden neck.
"Barnaby likes my pinwheel, Mommy!" Ruby giggled, holding the yellow paper wheel above the puppy's nose.
Matteo walked up, looking down at them with that rare, breathtaking smile that always made Clara's heart race.
He extended a hand, pulling Clara up into his arms, wrapping his strong arm around her waist.
"Looks like Barnaby approves of his new family," Matteo murmured, kissing her temple before resting his chin against her hair.

"Mrs. Higgins told me we have three hundred guests arriving for dinner tonight, Matteo," Clara teased, smiling against his chest.
"Let them arrive," Matteo chuckled, his hand resting comfortably on her hip. "This house is big enough for the whole city."
