Chapter 9 - The Broken Cream Silk Hem

Silence returned to the grand ballroom, pure, cold, and vast.

The forty syndicate commanders remained standing along the thirty-foot table, their weapons lowered, their eyes fixed on the man who had just dismantled a forty-year dynasty in twenty minutes without firing a single shot.

Julian stood at the head of the room.

He turned his gaze away from the shattered crystal and looked directly at me where I stood near the archway, wrapped in his heavy black cashmere coat.

He walked across the parquet floor, stopping before me.

He extended his right hand.

“Clara,” he said softly, his deep voice carrying clearly to every soul in the room. “Stand with me.”

I placed my uninjured left hand into his palm. He lifted my fingers with infinite gentleness, his arm supporting my balance as we walked together up to the auction podium.

Julian turned to face the assembly of syndicate leaders and museum trustees.

“Clara Vance is the daughter of Thomas Vance—the master shipbuilder who laid the keels for the original Vance fleet,” Julian declared, his voice ringing with absolute, undisputed authority. “She is a master conservator of the Courtauld Institute. And tonight, she took an iron strike to the bone to protect my grandfather’s Rembrandts from thieves.”

He looked down at me, his slate-gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made my breath catch in my throat.

“From this day forward, her word is law in this collection, on these docks, and within this house. Anyone who fails to treat her with the honor due to the Donna of this empire will answer directly to me.”

Don Salvatore Falcone, the oldest and most revered capo in Boston, was the first to move.

The elderly Don lifted his carved ash cane, bowed his silver head with deep, ancient respect, and raised his crystal glass of port into the air.

“To Donna Clara,” Falcone declared in his gravelly, resonant voice. “The guardian of the canvas. Honor to the brave! Honor to the house of Vance!”

One by one, the remaining thirty-nine syndicate commanders bowed their heads, their voices joining together in a synchronized, thunderous chorus that shook the crystal chandeliers overhead:

“To Donna Clara! Long live the Vance Outfit!”
