Chapter 13 - Cleaning House along Lake Shore Drive

The following three weeks were a whirlwind of joyous celebration and new beginnings.
Under my direction, the Silva Foundation established an independent legal defense clinic in South Chicago—providing free tenant defense, medical advocacy, and emergency financial relief for working-class families facing predatory debt collectors.
The domestic and groundskeeping staff at the Lake Shore Drive mansion were given permanent employment contracts with full pension benefits, union wages, and comprehensive healthcare coverage under the newly chartered Vance Maritime Accord.
Mrs. Gable was promoted to Chief of Estate Administration, overseeing a fully staffed, respectful household where no worker was ever treated as an invisible servant.
One Saturday morning in June, I walked into the grand conservatory.
The room had been completely restored, its glass panes sparkling like diamonds under the summer sun, the tropical foliage lush, green, and thriving.
The antique copper watering trough where Christian had once cornered Maya had been preserved in the center of the walkway.
Mounted on the polished brick pedestal beside it was a gleaming silver plaque engraved with the words:
THE TROUGH OF THE WALKING BEAR — DEDICATED TO MAYA AND CHRISTIAN, WHO TAUGHT THIS HOUSE HOW TO LAUGH AGAIN.
I stood before the plaque, my fingers gently touching the cool metal, feeling no grief, no fear—only the deep, unshakeable triumph of a family that had walked through the fire and emerged unbroken.
Footsteps sounded softly on the brick walkway.
Christian walked into the conservatory, carrying three-year-old Maya on his broad shoulders.
Maya leaned down, kissing her father’s hair, before pointing toward the silver plaque.
“Look, Daddy! The plaque has little bears on the corners!”
Christian looked up at his daughter, then looked at me, his amber eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made my heart overflow.

“Little bears for our bravest girl, Maya,” Christian murmured, reaching out with his free hand to pull me against his side. “The bear that watches over our home forever.”
