Chapter 14 - The Music Box RestoredSix months later.

Spring had finally arrived in Chicago. The ice had melted from Lake Michigan, replaced by sparkling turquoise waves beneath a brilliant blue sky. The tulip gardens surrounding the Rossi estate burst into vivid blooms of yellow, crimson, and white.
In the grand banquet hall of the mansion, another gathering was taking place.
There were no corrupt councilmen. No calculating syndicate underbosses. No armed guards watching from the shadows of the velvet drapes.
Around the long mahogany table sat the people who truly mattered:
My mother, dressed in a beautiful floral silk dress, laughing with Daniel and the senior household staff.
Daniel, sitting comfortably in a crisp suit, sharing stories with the foundation’s legal directors.
Mia, wearing a bright yellow sundress, sitting proudly at the center of the table, her dark hair woven with fresh daisies.
And at the head of the table sat Matteo, looking more relaxed and handsome than I had ever seen him.
I walked into the dining room carrying a large white ceramic platter.
On the platter sat a magnificent, multi-tiered gingerbread cake decorated with delicate white icing and a tiny, perfectly formed gingerbread cookie with both ears intact.
Written across the base in delicate white icing were the words:
TO OUR FAMILY. WITH LOVE.
Mia jumped up from her chair with a joyous squeal. “The gingerbread cake!”
The entire room erupted into warm, delighted laughter and applause.
Matteo stood up, his eyes locked onto mine as I set the cake down in front of him.
He picked up a silver fork, cut a generous slice, and took a bite.
He closed his eyes, savoring the rich, spicy ginger and fresh nutmeg flavor that carried the history, the courage, and the rebirth of his home.
When he opened his eyes, he looked directly at Mia, then at me.
“It’s perfection,” Matteo announced, his voice thick with deep, resonant warmth.
Mia clapped her hands. “Sophie’s recipe is the best in the whole world!”
“It is, baby,” Matteo agreed, kissing the top of his daughter’s head.
Then, Matteo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an antique velvet box.
The room fell into an eager, expectant hush.

He walked around the table until he stood directly in front of me.
He dropped onto one knee on the polished marble floor.
