Chapter 14 - The Nightingale’s Song at SunriseOn the evening before our wedding, our family gathered in the private dining room of the estate for a quiet, intimate celebration.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the terrace.
The people gathered around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:
My mother, Helen, sitting tall and proud in her favorite navy dress, laughing as she shared childhood stories of me with Albert Vance.
Albert, sitting beside Victor, enjoying a glass of fine Barolo.
And at the head of the table sat Cassian Vance, looking more relaxed and handsome than he had ever appeared in his life.
At eight o'clock, Cassian tapped his wine glass with his silver dessert spoon.
The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.
Cassian reached into his breast pocket and produced the little silver nightingale music box that his mother had designed twenty years ago.
It had been cleaned, polished, and mounted in a custom shadowbox crafted from reclaimed walnut from the Montauk estate, with a brass plaque reading:
THE SONG THAT BROUGHT US HOME — DONNA ELENA VANCE, 2004.
He turned his dark, soulful eyes toward Albert Vance.
“Uncle Albert,” Cassian said, his voice rich and deep with paternal love.
“Yes, Cassian?”
“My mother asked you to keep this music box until I stood before an altar,” Cassian murmured, his voice thick with deep emotion. “You kept your word through twenty years of silence. You gave my family its soul back. You gave me my life back.”
He handed the shadowbox to Albert, who held it against his chest with tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks.
“Thank you, son,” Albert whispered. “Elena’s soul is finally at rest.”
Cassian turned to me, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so vast, so profound, that words were entirely unnecessary.
He raised his glass of vintage port high into the air.

“To our family,” Cassian declared, his voice ringing with absolute, eternal devotion. “Forever whole. Forever protected.”
“To our family!” we cheered together, clinking our glasses beneath the warm candlelight.
