Chapter 8 - Midnight Ambush on the Bayou RoadThe meeting at Jackson Square concluded within fifteen minutes.

Under the ancient laws of the Gulf Coast syndicate, a family found guilty of treason against the high seat was stripped of all charters, titles, and commercial assets.

Marco Bellini was placed in federal protective custody by private decree, to be handed over to maritime authorities for thirty years of tax fraud, murder-for-hire, and illegal arms trafficking.

Vanessa Bellini was stripped of her inheritance and banished from Louisiana, ordered to board a cargo freighter bound for an offshore agricultural holding in South America, never to return to the United States on pain of death.

That evening, Luca and I returned to Bayou Teche in a convoy of three armored vehicles.

We had brought an engineering crew and surveyors to begin the immediate restoration of the historic property.

The sun was setting behind the cypress trees, casting long, crimson shadows across the calm, dark water of the bayou. The scent of woodsmoke from a nearby cabin drifted through the cool evening air.

We stood on the bank where the old smokehouse had stood fifty years ago.

“This is where it began, Nora,” Luca said softly, standing beside me with his hands in his pockets. “And this is where the debt is paid.”

He handed me an embossed leather folder containing the newly certified land patent, stamped with the golden seal of the State of Louisiana and the maritime admiralty court.

Nora Reed — Sole Proprietor and Trustee of the Samuel Reed Bayou Preserve.

I held the heavy parchment against my chest, tears finally spilling down my cheeks without restraint.

“My father died believing nobody would ever remember,” I whispered, looking up at the ancient pecan trees. “He spent his last days staring at the ceiling in a county clinic, wondering if his father’s sacrifice was entirely in vain.”

Luca stepped closer, his broad frame shielding me from the rising river breeze. He reached out, his warm, scarred fingers gently wiping the tears from my face.

“Nothing done with honor is ever in vain, Nora,” he murmured, his voice rich and steady. “The truth just takes its time to cross the river.”

Suddenly, the crack of a high-caliber rifle shattered the evening peace.

The round struck the cypress post two inches from Luca’s shoulder, sending wooden splinters exploding through the air.

“Ambush!” Dante roared from the levee road, drawing his weapon and returning fire into the dense palmetto brush across the bayou canal.
