Chapter 10 - Bloodlines of the Boston Harbor

Two months later, on a crisp, sunlit Saturday afternoon, Julian, Leo, and Elena brought baby David to the historic chapel overlooking the harbor in Marblehead.

The chapel was quiet, peaceful, and bathed in golden winter light that filtered through the century-old stained-glass windows.

We walked down a secluded gravel path until we reached a beautiful, shaded plot near the water’s edge.

Standing beneath a towering granite cross was the headstone of David Vance:

David Vance (1995–2026) — An Honest Man, A Father of Honor.

Fresh bouquets of white calla lilies, red roses, and fragrant sweet basil rested at the base of the stone.

Elena knelt beside her late husband’s headstone, holding baby David wrapped in his Scottish wool blanket, resting her hand on the carved granite.

“We kept your name safe, David,” Elena whispered softly through her tears. “Our boy is home. He will never know the dark.”

Julian knelt beside her on the gravel path, his hand resting respectfully on the stone.

“Your son carries your name, David,” Julian said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet churchyard. “He will inherit an empire of honor. In this house, your courage will never be forgotten.”

Leo knelt beside them, placing a small folded paper crane beside the lilies on the stone—the identical crane Elena had made for him ten years ago in room 412.

“Thank you, David,” Leo murmured. “We will protect them forever.”

Julian stood up, pulling Elena and baby David into his arms, wrapping his heavy wool overcoat around all three of them, shielding them from the Atlantic wind.

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his father, sliding the chain into Elena’s palm.
