testimony

Chapter 1 - The Broken HaspI had nearly finished serving the prime rib platters to the twenty-four syndicate capos seated along the grand dining table.

One more platter.

That was all I needed to survive the dinner before collapsing onto the cot in the service scullery.

Every nerve ending in my left hand was shrieking with a blinding, nauseating throb, the swollen skin stretched so tight over my broken knuckles that it looked ready to tear open under the chandelier lights.

So I kept my injured hand clamped securely beneath the heavy cotton folds of my serving apron.

And balanced the heavy silver platter using only my right palm and wrist.

My name is Maya Vance.

I was twenty-six years old, had worked the domestic staff at Matteo Rossi’s Chicago compound for eleven months, and had spent the last four hours fighting through dizziness just to pretend I was unbroken.

The bruising across my metacarpals had turned a sickening, mottled shade of plum and black.

Two of my fingers were completely rigid, locked in an agonizing claw.

And I had exactly seventy-two dollars left to pay for my younger brother’s seizure medication on Monday morning.

Missing this shift meant watching him slip into convulsions without medicine.

Telling Matteo Rossi what I had witnessed in the private archive two hours before dinner felt like inviting a bullet into the back of my skull.

Around the glittering table, twenty-four powerful commanders from the Midwestern syndicates were laughing over vintage port, celebrating Matteo’s alliance with Camilla Vance.

Camilla sat in a bespoke backless emerald gown.

Diamonds coiled around her throat like shards of ice.

Her polished, radiant smile had been locked in place since the first armored limousine arrived at the iron gates.

At the center of the table sat Matteo Rossi.

Thirty-seven years old.

Bespoke charcoal tuxedo.

The undisputed sovereign of the Chicago Outfit, a man whose calculating silence was feared far more than an open firefight.

I stepped up to his left side to set down his entree dish.

Under normal circumstances, I would have used both hands to steady the heavy porcelain rim without making a sound against the wood.

Tonight, I reached awkwardly across my torso using only my right arm, my shoulder trembling violently under the weight.

The porcelain base rocked against the wood.

A single drop of dark truffle glaze splashed onto the white damask cloth.

Camilla let out an exaggerated, irritated sigh that carried across the quiet hum of conversation.

“For heaven’s sake, Maya! Are you completely incapable of using both hands like a trained maid?”

Heat burned my cheeks.

“I apologize, Miss Vance.”

“Then use your left hand to steady the plate!”

I attempted to bring my left hand out from beneath the fabric to touch the china.

A blinding spike of pain shot through my carpal bones, causing my fingers to lock up in a sudden, violent spasm.

The porcelain plate slid sideways.

Before it could crash against the floor, Matteo’s bare hand shot out and caught the rim in midair, setting it down on the table with absolute, unbroken stillness.

“Leave it.”

His deep, quiet voice cut through the laughter in the hall like a razor blade.

He looked directly at my hidden arm.

“Maya.”

My stomach knotted in cold terror.

“Yes, Mr. Rossi?”

“What is wrong with your left hand?”

Before I could draw breath, Camilla gave an airy, condescending laugh that failed to hide the razor-sharp edge of panic beneath her words.

“The clumsy girl caught her fingers in the heavy brass latch of the walk-in ice chest this afternoon. She has been whining about it to the staff ever since.”

My blood turned to liquid ice.

Because I hadn't stepped foot near the walk-in ice chest all day.

And I hadn't said a single syllable to the staff.

Camilla knew with absolute certainty that no ice chest had touched my skin.

Matteo slowly turned his cold gray eyes toward his fiancée.

“The ice chest latch?”

“Yes, darling,” Camilla said, delicately tracing the rim of her champagne flute. “She was carelessly rushing through the seafood prep.”

I stared down at the floor tiles.

I had spent the afternoon cleaning the administrative offices.

Matteo looked back at me.

“Did you crush your hand in an ice chest latch, Maya?”

I could feel Camilla’s emerald eyes drilling into the side of my face like twin daggers.

“Yes, sir.”

“At what time?”

“Around four o'clock.”

Camilla immediately added, “She was assisting Mrs. Gable with the shellfish, Matteo. Really, must we cross-examine domestic staff in front of the commission?”

Matteo ignored her completely.

“Show me your hand, Maya.”

My heart hammered violently against my ribs.

“It's really nothing, Mr. Rossi. I can finish the service—”

“Let me see it.”

The command was quiet, smooth as silk, and absolute.

Slowly, trembling with agony and fear, I drew my left hand from beneath the white apron and placed it on the white linen beside his plate.

The damage was horrific.

Dark, swollen contusions pooled across the back of my hand, two knuckles were severely deformed, and the skin was split and bleeding near the nail bed.

A visiting boss across the table set his cigar down in silence.

Matteo studied the injury without moving a muscle.

“Have you seen a doctor?”

“No, sir.”

Camilla sighed, crossing her diamond-draped arms.

“Matteo, she pinched her skin! Are we going to summon a surgeon for a kitchen cleaner during our engagement dinner?”

Matteo’s eyes darkened into pits of lethal obsidian.

“Maya. Did someone in this house do this to you?”

My eyes instinctively shifted toward Camilla.

I regretted the mistake the second my gaze flickered.

Because Matteo caught the movement instantly.

And Camilla’s face flashed with pure, murderous malice.

Matteo followed my eyes back to his bride-to-be.

Then he looked at me again.

“Are you afraid that telling me the truth will cost you your livelihood?”

Tears welled in my eyes.

“My brother depends on my paycheck, sir.”

“You will not lose your job.”

Camilla let out a forced, high-pitched laugh.

“Matteo, she is fabricating dramatic excuses for her own clumsy incompetence!”

Matteo stood up from the head of the table.

“Maya, leave the tray.”

“I can finish the shift, Mr. Rossi—”

“You are excused for the night.”

“Please, sir. I need the hours on my card—”

“You will be paid for the entire month.”

He looked toward his chief of security standing by the archway.

“Marco. Escort Maya to the clinic. Have Dr. Vance splint those bones immediately.”

Camilla stood halfway up from her chair.

“Matteo, this is completely unnecessary! A simple cold compress is all she needs!”

Matteo turned his terrifying gaze directly onto his fiancée.

“How do you know what she needs, Camilla?”

The entire banquet hall fell into an icy, breathless silence.

I turned toward the service exit.

“Maya.”

Matteo’s baritone stopped me in my tracks.

“Was Camilla alone when your hand was injured?”

My stomach plummeted into an abyss.

I looked back toward the table.

Camilla was staring straight at me, her chest heaving with suppressed panic.

“No, sir.”

Matteo’s jaw set like iron.

“Who was with her?”

I couldn't answer.

Camilla quickly interjected, “Darling, surely we can discuss the staff after our guests depart!”

Matteo studied my face for three seconds.

Then he nodded.

“Go get your bones set.”

I left the banquet hall.

For the next forty-five minutes, Matteo Rossi played the gracious host with terrifying, flawless precision.

He toasted the alliance with Camilla’s father.

He discussed cargo terminals with the foreign delegates.

He smiled for the photographers.

By the time the foreign guests moved to the terrace for cigars, Camilla had completely relaxed, convinced that the incident had dissolved.

At 10:15 PM, Camilla retired to her private suite on the second floor.

Matteo waited until her bedroom deadbolt clicked shut.

Then he walked silently down the hallway into his private study and dialed his head of security.

“Marco. Who visited the private security mainframe this afternoon?”

Four minutes later, Marco walked into the study, his face grim.

“Boss. Miss Vance had an external visitor arrive through the service gate around three-thirty.”

“Who?”

“A private forensic technician named Julian Vance.”

Matteo’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice.

“Why would Camilla require a forensic technician in my private server room?”

Marco hesitated.

“The security cameras show she brought him directly to the physical storage rack containing the archival backup hard drives.”

Matteo went completely still.

Every piece of security footage on the estate was backed up to an encrypted magnetic server rack, protected by a dual-key biometric lock that only Matteo and his deceased brother had access codes to.

Since his brother Julian’s murder two years ago in an alleged harbor explosion, the footage from that night had remained locked in the server room, untouched by anyone.

“Bring Maya down here the moment the doctor finishes,” Matteo commanded.

Twenty minutes later, I sat across from Matteo, my left hand bound in clean white splints and resting on a padded velvet cushion.

Matteo placed a surveillance photograph on the mahogany desk between us.

Julian Vance.

Data Specialist.

My breath caught in my throat.

“Maya. Was this man in the server room with Camilla?”

I nodded, my voice trembling.

“Yes, sir.”

“What was Camilla doing with him?”

“She had the magnetic drive containing the footage from the night of your brother's murder on the table,” I whispered, tears burning my eyes. “Mr. Vance was using a degaussing magnet to wipe the physical sectors of the drive.”

Matteo’s jaw tightened until the bone looked ready to split his skin.

“What did he say to her?”

“He told her that once the sectors were wiped, no state police or private investigator could ever recover the footage,” I choked out. “He said the video showing her father's private yacht ramming your brother's boat would be gone forever.”

Matteo’s eyes turned into black, bottomless voids of pure death.

“And your hand, Maya?”

My chin trembled violently.

“I was carrying clean towels into the server room washroom. Camilla heard the door handle turn. When she saw me standing by the server rack, she grabbed the magnet, ran into the corridor, and slammed the heavy reinforced steel vault door straight onto my fingers.”

Matteo looked at the splints on my hand.

“Did Vance attempt to stop her?”

“He told her she was being reckless. He told her she was leaving evidence.”

“And what did Camilla say?”

“She told him that a domestic cleaner wouldn't dare open her mouth if she valued her sister's life.”

Matteo slowly reached for his desk phone, dialing an internal line.

“Marco. Lock the estate gates. Disarm Camilla’s private security detail.”

He ended the call, rising slowly from behind the heavy mahogany desk.

I reached out with my uninjured right hand, catching his sleeve.

“Mr. Rossi... there's something else.”

Matteo paused, looking down at me.

“What is it, Maya?”

“When Vance asked why she was wiping the drive tonight, Camilla laughed.”

Matteo’s gaze turned deadly.

“What did she tell him?”

May you like

My voice broke into a terrified whisper.

“She told him that her father's mercenaries were already waiting in the harbor... and that tonight's engagement dinner was the last meal you would ever eat.”
