Chapter 11 - The Scars Beneath the LaceThat evening, the mansion was peaceful and quiet.

Claire had been discharged from the hospital earlier that morning, having achieved complete neurological stabilization on an innovative medication protocol that had eliminated her seizures entirely.
She was currently upstairs in the third-floor library, curled up on a velvet daybed with Mrs. Gable, reading her favorite adventure novels while eating homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Dante and I sat together before the crackling fire in his private study.
A bottle of vintage Brunello sat on the low coffee table between us, alongside two crystal glasses that caught the amber firelight.
I sat on the sofa, leaning back against the plush leather, watching the flames dance across the oak logs.
Dante sat beside me, his arm draped comfortably along the back of the sofa, his fingers gently playing with the ends of my dark hair.
“You look thoughtful tonight, Maya,” he murmured, his deep baritone rumbling pleasantly in the quiet room.
“I was just thinking about eleven months ago, Dante,” I said, looking down at my hands resting in my lap. “When I first arrived at this fortress with a cheap cardboard suitcase and an interview suit I bought from a thrift store. I was terrified of you. The other maids told me that you were a shadow who executed men without a second thought.”
Dante took a slow sip of his wine, looking into the fire.
“For two years, Maya, after Julian was murdered, I was a shadow. I thought that if I built an iron wall around this estate, if I became more ruthless than the wolves outside my gate, I could protect the people I had left. I convinced myself that an alliance with the Delacroix family was the price I had to pay to keep the harbor peaceful.”
He turned to face me, his gray eyes soft with an emotion that stripped away every ounce of his dangerous reputation.
“And then you dropped a silver plate on my table,” he continued, a faint, tender chuckle touching his voice. “You stood there with broken bones, hiding your pain under an apron, refusing to lie to me even when Giselle threatened your life.”
He reached out, his warm, scarred fingers gently lifting my left hand.
He traced the line of my wrist, feeling the pulse beating steady and strong beneath the skin.
“You reminded me of who my brother was, Maya. You reminded me that power without honor is just another kind of weakness.”
My breath trembled in my throat.
“I just wanted to protect my sister, Dante. And... I couldn't bear the thought of you marrying the woman who helped kill your brother.”
Dante leaned closer, his broad frame casting a warm, protective shadow over me.
His hand moved up to cup the side of my face, his thumb gently caressing my cheekbone.
“You saved my life that night, Maya,” he whispered, his lips hovering inches from mine. “In every way a man can be saved.”
He leaned in, his lips meeting mine in a gentle, questioning contact that sent a jolt of pure, breathtaking electricity through my entire being.
I didn't pull away.
I raised my uninjured right hand, resting it against the solid, warm muscle of his chest, leaning into the embrace.
The kiss deepened—rich, tender, and full of a fierce, protective passion that washed away every lingering shadow of fear, pain, and uncertainty that had haunted my life.
When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his dark eyes were blazing with an unmistakable, eternal devotion.

“Stay with me, Maya,” he whispered against my lips. “Not as a guest. Not as a ward. As the woman who holds my heart.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Dante,” I whispered back, my heart swelling with a happiness so vast it felt like flying. “I’m right here.”
