Chapter 4 - The Appraiser’s Broken LedgerBy 1:00 AM, the sub-basement holding vaults beneath the Long Island fortress were colder than the rain outside.

Andrew Keller sat zip-tied to a steel chair in the center of the interrogation cell, his designer trench coat soaked with mud, his nose bleeding onto his silk tie.

Daniel stood beside the wall, holding Keller’s encrypted laptop and three mobile phones.

The heavy iron door swung open.

Dante walked in, accompanied by me. I wore a clean navy sweater and dark trousers provided by the household staff, my left arm resting securely in its sling.

When Keller saw Dante, all the color drained from his face, leaving him the sickly shade of old parchment.

“Mr. Caruso... please,” Keller stammered, his teeth chattering in terror. “I was only hired as an independent consultant! Miss Bellini told me the jewelry was part of her pre-nuptial settlement! She told me you had authorized the appraisal!”

Dante didn't raise his voice. He pulled up a wooden chair, sitting down directly in front of the trembling liquidator.

He rested his forearms on his knees, leaning forward until his face was inches from Keller’s.

“You told Vanessa that an indebted cleaner wouldn't dare open her mouth if she valued her sister's life, Andrew.”

Keller froze, his eyes darting frantically toward my splinted arm.

“I... I was speaking hypothetically! I was trying to de-escalate the situation!”

“You stood in my office while my fiancée slammed a solid oak door onto an innocent woman’s bones,” Dante whispered, each word dropping like an iron weight. “And then you took two hundred thousand dollars to stage an armed hit at my mother’s church tomorrow afternoon.”

Keller broke into violent sobs, his forehead hitting his knees.

“It wasn't my plan! It was Salvatore Bellini! Vanessa’s father!” Keller wept, the confession tearing out of his throat. “Salvatore owes sixty million dollars to the Montreal cartel! The cartel was threatening to seize their shipping docks in New Jersey! They needed your mother’s emeralds to pay off the debt before the federal auditors arrived on Monday!”

Dante reached into his pocket, pulling out a printed bank wire confirmation.

“Where is the extraction boat coming from tomorrow, Andrew?”

“Oyster Bay!” Keller gasped, desperate to save his own skin. “A forty-foot cigarette boat named The Siren. Four men armed with suppressed submachine guns. They were told to fire into the terrace crowd to create chaos, grab the pendant from your neck, and meet Salvatore Bellini at a private airstrip in Farmingdale!”

Dante stood up slowly, looking down at the broken appraiser with cold, absolute detachment.

“Daniel.”

“Yes, boss.”

“Have our maritime tactical team seize The Siren at the Oyster Bay marina. Detain the crew. If anyone resists, put them in the Sound.”

He looked at Keller.

“And leave Mr. Keller in this chair until the federal prosecutors arrive with his interstate racketeering warrants.”
