Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Linen RoomThe midnight hours at the Moretti estate were never truly quiet.

Even when the guests had departed and the luxury cars had rolled down the long gravel driveway, the mansion seemed to breathe with its own dark secrets.
I sat on a low stool in the linen room on the third floor, folding crisp white pillowcases while my mind raced back to the dining room table.
Benjamin’s words echoed relentlessly in my ears: “The lady who came to pick me up this afternoon said she couldn't take me unless you knew.”
Who was that woman?
No adoption agency or boarding school representative would arrive on the eve of a mafia boss's wedding without direct authorization unless... unless someone high up within the organization had authorized the transfer behind Luca’s back.
The door creaked open.
I gasped, dropping a pillowcase as a slender figure stepped into the sliver of light coming from the hallway.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, who had served the Moretti family for over thirty years.
Her hair was tied back in a stern bun, and her expression was etched with deep lines of worry.
"Pick that up, child," she whispered, shutting the door quietly behind her.
I scrambled to retrieve the pillowcase, my hands trembling. "Mrs. Gable, I—I was just finishing up—"
"Save it, Claire," she interrupted, pulling up a wooden crate and sitting down opposite me. "You shouldn't have interfered tonight. You know how Vanessa operates. If she wants someone gone, she makes sure they disappear without a trace."
"I couldn't just stand there and watch him starve," I said defensively, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He's nine years old! And now she's trying to send him away to some institution?"
Mrs. Gable sighed, rubbing her tired eyes. "It's worse than you think."
My breath hitched. "What do you mean?"
"That boarding school she booked—it’s not a school," Mrs. Gable muttered, leaning in close so her words barely brushed the air. "It’s a relocation front for children associated with compromised syndicates in Europe. Once a child enters that system, identity papers are forged, and they are handed over to foreign buyers."
Ice water seemed to flood my veins.
"Buyers?" I choked out. "You mean... human trafficking?"
"Keep your voice down!" Mrs. Gable hissed, grabbing my wrist with surprising strength. "Vanessa isn't just marrying Luca for his money or his name. Her family has ties to the Russian syndicate in Brighton Beach. They’ve been looking for a way to destabilize the Moretti shipping lines for months. Removing Benjamin was phase one. Once the boy is out of the country, Luca’s lineage is broken, and Vanessa gains control over his estate through prenuptial clauses signed in secret."
The room seemed to spin.
"Does Mr. Moretti know?"
"Luca is blind when it comes to women he lets into his inner circle," she replied grimly. "He thinks his authority is absolute. But he doesn't realize Vanessa has already bribed half of his security detail."
"We have to tell him," I insisted, standing up abruptly. "We have to tell him tonight!"
"If you go to him with accusations and no physical proof, Vanessa will twist it around and have you thrown in the Hudson River before sunrise," Mrs. Gable warned. "We need evidence. Real evidence. The signed transfer papers."
"Where would she keep them?"
"In her private suite," Mrs. Gable said slowly, pointing toward the ceiling. "In the floor safe behind the master wardrobe. But the code changes weekly."
I stared at her, realizing the terrifying path opening up before me.
If I stayed quiet, an innocent little boy would be stolen away forever, and my mother’s rent money wouldn't mean a damn thing if I couldn't live with my own conscience.

"When is she leaving her room?" I asked quietly.
"She’s attending a late-night conference call with her family attorneys in the East Wing," Mrs. Gable replied, checking her gold pocket watch. "You have twenty minutes."
