Chapter 11 - The Confession of VanessaThe morning sun broke through the smoke-filled skies over New York, casting long, golden rays across the shattered marble foyer of the Moretti estate.

Police cars and private security units crowded the driveway, while federal agents in dark suits hauled away crates of encrypted hard drives and financial documents seized from Vanessa’s suite.

I sat on a velvet sofa in the grand parlor, sipping a cup of hot tea Mrs. Gable had brewed, while Benjamin played quietly with his wooden train set near the bay window.

The door to the private holding room opened.

Luca stepped out, adjusting the cuffs of his freshly pressed shirt.

He walked over to where I was sitting, his expression calm, though deep lines of exhaustion were etched around his eyes.

"She’s talking," Luca said quietly, sitting down on the edge of the sofa across from me.

I looked up. "Vanessa?"

"She realized her uncles abandoned her the moment the raid failed," Luca replied, resting his forearms on his knees. "She signed a full confession detailing every shell corporation, every bribe, and every document the Brighton syndicate used to infiltrate my shipping lines."

"What will happen to her?" I asked.

"Federal penitentiary," Luca said without a trace of emotion. "Maximum security. She’ll never see the outside of a concrete cell again."

A cold shiver ran down my spine, but I felt no pity.

She had tried to destroy an innocent child for money and power.

"And her family?"

"They're scattering across Europe as we speak," Luca said. "My associates are already handling the cleanup. By tonight, the Moretti name will be entirely clear of their influence."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the gold-plated check he had tried to hand me the night before.

He placed it gently on the glass coffee table between us, pushing it toward me with one finger.

"This is still yours, Claire," he said softly. "Plus a permanent scholarship fund for your mother's medical care and your college education, if you want it."

I stared at the check, then looked up into his eyes.

"Mr. Moretti... I can't take this," I whispered. "It's too much."

"You saved my son's life," Luca said firmly. "Compared to that, this check is nothing."

Before I could answer, footsteps approached from the hallway.

Benjamin dropped his wooden train, ran across the rug, and threw his arms around his father’s waist.

Luca instantly wrapped his arms around the boy, lifting him up into his lap with a warmth and tenderness that completely transformed his lethal demeanor.

"Daddy," Benjamin whispered, looking over his father’s shoulder at me. "Is Miss Claire going to stay with us now?"

Luca paused, his dark eyes meeting mine.
