Chapter 8 - The Council of Three Great LakesBy 8:30 AM, the winter sun broke through the clouds over Chicago in a brilliant, blinding sheet of sapphire and gold.

Inside the grand banquet hall of the Grand Drake Pavilion, the forty syndicate commanders, port authority commissioners, and federal maritime judges who had attended the engagement dinner were reconvened for an extraordinary emergency council.

Every man sat in rigid, breathless silence along the thirty-foot mahogany table beneath the Austrian chandeliers.

At the head of the raised marble dais sat Don Damon Vance.

He wore an immaculate bespoke black three-piece suit, his presence radiating such terrifying, undisputed authority that not a single capo dared to speak above a whisper.

And sitting in the high-backed mahogany armchair directly to his right—the place setting that had been laid with crystal and gold for the future Donna of Chicago—was me.

I wore an exquisite, tailored gown of deep navy wool that draped gracefully over my slender frame, my dark hair swept back in an elegant chignon, the neat butterfly bandage above my left eye worn not as a mark of shame, but as a badge of unbreakable honor.

Beside my chair sat seven-year-old Mia Vance, wearing an ivory velvet dress, happily eating warm strawberry pastries while holding her new golden retriever puppy in her lap.

The heavy double doors of the banquet hall burst open with a concussive boom.

Two armed guards dragged Camilla Sterling down the center aisle.

Her emerald satin gown was gone, replaced by a coarse gray institutional smock from the holding cells. Her diamond serpent necklace had been stripped away, her bare feet blue with cold, her makeup smeared across her pale, terrified face.

Behind her walked her father, Julian Sterling, his wrists secured in heavy steel transport cuffs, flanked by four federal marshals with arrest warrants drawn.

When Camilla saw me sitting beside Damon, holding his daughter's hand, a shrill, hysterical shriek tore from her throat.

"Damon! You cannot seat a scullery maid at the high council table! She washes your wine glasses! She scrubbed the cellar floor yesterday!"

Damon did not raise his voice.

He reached onto the table, picked up his silver water goblet, and tapped the rim with a silver spoon.

Chime.

The clear, ringing tone cut through the hall like an executioner's bell.

The forty capos fell dead silent.

Damon turned his slate-gray eyes directly onto Julian Sterling.

"Julian," Damon said softly, his voice quiet enough that every man in the room leaned forward to hear.

"Yes, Don Damon?" Julian whispered, his head hanging in total, broken defeat.

"Yesterday afternoon, your daughter threw Clara Ward into a bronze display case because she caught your notary forging conservatorship petitions over my daughter's trust," Damon said.

Julian wept silently, his tears dropping onto the parquet floor.

Damon looked at the forty commanders.

"Under the ancient laws of the Great Lakes Syndicate, any family that conspires to harm an innocent child, steal an orphan's inheritance, and batter a member of this household is stripped of all charters, all territories, and all protection."

Don Carmine Falcone, the oldest and most revered capo in the Midwest, slowly pushed back his heavy armchair.

He stood up, leaning both hands on his silver-topped cane, looking at the Sterling family with ancient, cold disgust.

"The Commission recognizes the blood debt, Don Damon," Falcone rasped, his voice echoing across the vaulted ceiling. "The house of Sterling is stripped bare."

Damon nodded once.

He looked at Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance standing by the archway.

"Deliver Julian and Camilla Sterling to the federal detention center in Terre Haute. Every dock, every warehouse, and every bank account bearing the Sterling name in this state is seized under the authority of the Vance Maritime Trust."

Camilla screamed, clawing at the floorboards, her cries echoing down the long gallery until the heavy iron doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice forever.
