Chapter 12 - A Sanctuary in the High EstateBy late May, the transformation of our lives was complete.

The private master suite on the top floor of the coastal estate had become a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and light.
The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the sparkling waters of the harbor, while fresh bouquets of white hydrangeas and fragrant magnolias adorned every table.
Bella had completed her first semester at the prestigious laboratory school with straight A's, surrounded by friends who visited the estate every weekend to study in the private library.
And every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, without fail, the long mahogany dining table was filled with family.
Don Carmine Falcone would sit at the head of the table, laughing as he carved the prime rib, while Mrs. Gable brought platters of handmade pasta and warm sourdough bread from the kitchen.
One sunny Saturday afternoon in June, the air was warm and sweet, carrying the fresh scent of ocean water and blooming lilacs.
I walked along the stone terrace overlooking the water, wearing an ivory silk blouse and tailored dark trousers, my dark hair dancing in the breeze.
Dominic stood by the stone balustrade, wearing an open-collared navy linen shirt, watching the cargo freighters glide across the harbor channel.
When he heard my footsteps on the flagstones, he turned around.
His face lit up with that rare, breathtaking smile that always made my heart race.
He walked across the terrace to meet me, wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his solid, warm chest.
He buried his face into the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.
“Vanilla, ocean salt, and clean spring rain,” he murmured against my skin, sending a delicious shiver down my spine. “The only scent I ever want to come home to.”
I leaned back against his arm, smiling up into his soulful dark eyes.
“The academy enrolled one hundred new textile apprentices this morning, Dominic,” I whispered.
“And the new container terminal opened without a single hour of delay,” Dominic smiled against my cheek. “All thanks to our Executive Trustee.”
“All thanks to a sovereign who had the good sense to look at a monofilament seam,” I teased, tracing the rugged line of his jaw.
Dominic chuckled—a rich, deep, joyful sound that echoed across the terrace—and tightened his grip around my waist.
He looked down at me, his expression shifting into a register of profound, breathtaking seriousness that made my pulse jump.
“Maya,” he said softly.
“Yes, Dominic?”
May you like
He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather, sliding the chain into my palm.
“Our family is whole, Maya. The storm will never touch us again.”
