THE MAFIA'S STOLEN VEIL / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - Bloodlines of the Mississippi BasinTwo weeks later, on a crisp, sunlit Saturday afternoon, Julian, Sarah, and I brought fresh white magnolias to the historic cemetery on Metairie Road overlooking the river.

The cemetery was quiet, peaceful, and bathed in golden autumn light that filtered through the ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

We walked down a secluded gravel path until we reached a beautiful, shaded plot surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas and fragrant rosemary bushes.

Standing beneath a towering granite cross was the headstone of my grandmother, Martha Ward:

Martha Ward (1942–2024) — Master Seamstress, A Woman of Honor.

Fresh bouquets of white calla lilies, red roses, and fragrant sweet basil rested at the base of the stone.

I knelt beside my grandmother’s headstone, resting my hand on the carved granite, my eyes bright with tears of profound, eternal peace.

“We kept your needle clean, Grandma,” I whispered softly through my tears. “The thread never lied. The truth is home. The shadows are gone forever.”

Julian stepped forward, kneeling beside me on the gravel path, his hand resting respectfully on the stone.

“Your granddaughter carries your courage, Mrs. Ward,” Julian said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet churchyard. “She is the sovereign of our fleet. In this house, your honor will never be forgotten.”

Sarah knelt beside us, placing a small antique spool of golden embroidery thread beside the lilies on the stone—the identical spool our grandmother had given me when I entered my first apprenticeship.

“Thank you, Grandma,” Sarah murmured. “We will protect the family forever.”

Julian stood up, pulling Sarah and me into his arms, wrapping his heavy wool overcoat around both of us, shielding us from the river wind.

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather, sliding the chain into my palm.

“Our family is whole, Clara. The river will never rise above our heads.”
