Chapter 5

DARKNESS FALLS ON THE ESTATE

The sudden blackout plunged the conservatory into pitch blackness.

Outside, the storm intensified, casting jagged flashes of lightning.

Each flash painted ghostly shadows across the marble floor.

Mira dropped to her knees, pulling Evan tight into her chest.

"Mr. Calder! Where are you?" Mira called out frantically.

"Stay down, Mira!" Bastian’s voice boomed through the dark.

The sound of a heavy scuffle echoed near the glass wall.

Flesh hitting flesh, followed by the shattering of a ceramic vase.

Mira’s heart hammered wildly against her ribs.

She shielded Evan with her own body on the cold floor.

Old Bruno let out a fierce, protective bark into the gloom.

"You can't stop what’s coming, Calder!" Rosalyn’s voice echoed.

It sounded closer now, shifting toward the emergency exit.

"The estate is locked down from the outside!"

"The security override is already active!"

A sharp click of a heavy metal door unlatching echoed out.

Then the sound of running heels fading down the stone hallway.

A blinding flash of lightning illuminated the conservatory interior.

Bastian stood alone against the shattered glass wall.

His clothes were disheveled, his hands bleeding slightly from broken ceramic.

Rosalyn was gone into the labyrinthine corridors of the manor.

"Dad!" Evan cried out, sobbing in the darkness.

"Evan! Are you alright?" Bastian shouted, rushing toward them.

He dropped to his knees beside Mira and his son.

His large hands hovered anxiously over the little boy.

"She... she put something in my milk, Dad," Evan wept.

"My tummy hurts."

Bastian’s breath hitched in his throat.

He pulled both Evan and Mira into his arms.

"We need to get out of the main house now," Bastian said grimly.

"The backup generator should be in the basement bunker."

"Dr. Vance, help me carry the dog."

The estate physician stumbled through the dark toward them.

"I... I have my medical flashlight right here," Vance stammered.

A small beam of LED light cut through the gloom.

It illuminated the ravaged state of the grand conservatory.

Bruno was panting heavily, his wounded leg bleeding again.

"We cannot stay here," Mira insisted, her voice full of resolve.

"She knows every secret passage in this historic manor."

"She spent months mapping the architectural blueprints."

Bastian looked up at Mira, seeing a fierce courage in her eyes.

He nodded slowly, realizing she was entirely right.

"Lead the way to the panic room, Mira," Bastian instructed.

"You know the servants' stairwell better than anyone."

Mira stood up, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.

She grabbed a heavy brass candleholder from a side table.

"Hold onto my apron, Evan," Mira whispered softly.

"Don't let go, no matter what you hear."

"I won't let her hurt you," Evan promised, his voice shaking.

They moved swiftly out of the conservatory into the dark hallway.

The wooden floorboards groaned beneath their hurried footsteps.

Outside the storm raged louder, shaking the ancient windows.

Suddenly, a shadow detached itself from the hallway ceiling.

A heavy iron chain swung down from the darkness above.

Mira shoved Bastian and Evan aside just in time.

The heavy chain smashed into the floorboards where they stood.

"Look out!" Mira screamed, raising her candleholder.
