Chapter 2 - THE CRACK IN THE FACADE

The crystal chandeliers hummed.

The elite guests stopped breathing.

Silver forks hovered inches from porcelain plates.

Nathaniel Rook did not blink.

His dark eyes bored straight into Vivian.

The silence in the grand ballroom grew heavy.

Suffocating.

Deadly.

Vivian’s hand trembled slightly against her satin hip.

She forced a tight, brittle laugh to her lips.

"Darling," she purred, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "You surely don't believe a frightened maid and a hysterical child."

Nathaniel remained motionless.

His broad shoulders blocked Vivian’s view of Elodie.

His thumb brushed the top of his daughter’s head.

A protective gesture.

A silent warning.

"Alma," Nathaniel’s voice was barely a whisper.

Yet it echoed across the entire room.

"Is this true?"

Alma swallowed hard.

Her shoulders shook beneath her starched uniform.

She kept her gaze fixed on the polished marble floor.

"Yes, Mr. Rook," Alma whispered. "Every single word."

Gasps rippled through the thirty high-society guests.

Whispers erupted like sudden static.

Senator Sterling adjusted his collar nervously.

Director Vance dropped his silver spoon onto the table.

Everyone knew what happened to those who lied to Nathaniel Rook.

Vivian felt the walls closing in.

Her pristine reputation was fracturing.

Piece.

By.

Piece.

"She is lying!" Vivian shrieked, stepping forward.

Her high heels clicked sharply against the floor.

"That maid hates me! She wants my place by your side!"

Nathaniel turned his head slowly.

His expression was carved from glacial stone.

"Did Alma speak?" Nathaniel asked coldly.

"No," Vivian stammered.

"Did Alma make you confess?"

"No, but—"

"Then why are you shouting, Vivian?"

The question hit like a physical blow.

Vivian stumbled backward.

Her manicured nails dug into her own palms.

She looked around the room for allies.

Found none.

Every face turned away.

Every guest pretended to study their wine glass.

Fear was a contagious disease in this room.

And Nathaniel Rook was the source.

Elodie buried her face in Nathaniel’s coat.

Her small fists clutched his dark fabric.

"Daddy," she whimpered softly. "I'm scared."

Nathaniel scooped his daughter up into his arms.

His powerful frame shifted effortlessly.

He cradled Elodie against his chest.

His eyes never left Vivian’s pale face.

"Guards," Nathaniel commanded.

Two massive men in black suits materialized from the shadows.

Weapons concealed beneath tailored jackets.

Absolute authority in their posture.

"Take Miss Cross to the West Wing holding room," Nathaniel ordered.

"Wait!" Vivian screamed, lunging forward.

"Nathaniel, you cannot do this! We are getting married in a week!"

"We were getting married in a week," Nathaniel corrected.

His voice lacked all human warmth.

"Now, you are an interrogation subject."

The guards grabbed Vivian’s arms.

Her silk dress rustled violently as she thrashed.

"Let me go! You arrogant monster!" she cursed.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them.

Silence returned to the banquet hall.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Absolute.

Nathaniel looked down at Alma.

His expression softened fractionally.

"Go to the medical wing," Nathaniel instructed the maid.

"Have the doctor check your scalp."

Alma curtsied deeply.

"Thank you, Mr. Rook."

She turned and fled the room.

Leaving Nathaniel alone with thirty terrified witnesses and his frightened daughter.

He carried Elodie toward the grand staircase.

Each step echoed in the cavernous hall.

"Daddy," Elodie whispered near his ear.

"Are we safe now?"

Nathaniel paused on the third step.

He looked back over his shoulder at the empty ballroom.

At the spilled wine.

At the ruined banquet.

"Always, little bird," Nathaniel promised.

"Nobody hurts you and breathes."

He walked up the stairs into the shadows.

Unaware that Vivian’s phone on the table was still recording.

May you like

And a hidden message had just been sent to a rival syndicate.

Cliffhanger: As Nathaniel carried Elodie upstairs, the discarded phone on the table lit up with a single text message from an unknown number: "The Rook estate is compromised. Execute Phase Two."
