Chapter 13 - THE FINAL GAMBIT

The shockwave threw debris across the entire shipyard.

Flames leaped ten feet into the air, turning the night sky a violent orange.

Marcus threw open the SUV door, firing his assault rifle toward the smoke.

"Boss!" Marcus roared over the deafening din.

Silence followed the blast.

Thick black smoke billowed across the concrete lot, obscuring everything.

Alma clutched Elodie tightly in the back seat, praying under her breath.

Slowly, a figure emerged from the smoke.

Broad-shouldered.

Covered in soot and ash.

Holding a limp, unconscious Julian Vane slung over his shoulder like a sack of grain.

Nathaniel tossed Vane’s body onto the ground near Marcus’s feet.

"Tie him up," Nathaniel commanded, his voice steady despite the blast burns on his arm.

Marcus nodded, quickly slapping heavy steel cuffs on Vane’s wrists.

"You okay, boss?" Marcus asked, inspecting the burn on Nathaniel’s sleeve.

"Just a scratch," Nathaniel replied, walking over to the driver’s side window.

He looked inside at Elodie.

Who was staring at him with wide, tear-filled eyes.

"You okay, little bird?" Nathaniel asked gently, opening the door.

Elodie scrambled out of the car and threw her arms around his waist.

"I was so scared, Daddy," she sobbed softly.

Nathaniel lifted her up, burying his face in her dark curls.

"It's over now," Nathaniel promised.

"Nobody will ever hurt you again."

Vane groaned on the ground, spitting out a mouthful of blood and rainwater.

"You... you're a fool, Nathaniel," Vane wheezed, laughing weakly.

"Killing me... won't stop what’s coming."

"The board... already voted."

"If I don't check in by midnight... the syndicate activates the scorched-earth protocol."

"Every safehouse... every asset... goes up in flames."

Nathaniel looked down at his treacherous brother with supreme pity.

"You always assumed I ran this syndicate alone, Julian."

Nathaniel pulled his satellite phone and pressed speed dial one.

"Execute Protocol Omega," Nathaniel instructed into the phone.

"Lock down all board accounts. Purge every loyalist tied to Vane."

"And clean house."

A crisp voice answered over the speaker: "Understood, Mr. Rook. Protocol Omega initiated. All hostile assets neutralized."

Vane’s eyes widened in sheer horror.

"You... you already anticipated this?" Vane stammered.

"I anticipated your betrayal ten years ago, Julian," Nathaniel replied coldly.

"I was just waiting for you to step out of the shadows."

Marcus hauled Vane to his feet and shoved him into the back of the armored SUV.

"Where to, boss?" Marcus asked.

"Federal lockup," Nathaniel said, strapping Elodie safely back into her booster seat.

"Let the authorities handle what’s left of him."

As the SUV turned around and headed back toward the city, the dark chapter of betrayal finally closed.

The storm had passed.

Leaving behind a quiet, unbreakable peace.

Cliffhanger: As they crossed the city bridge at dawn, Elodie pointed out the window and whispered, "Look, Daddy... the sun is coming out."
