Chapter 11 - THE GHOST FROM THE PAST

The highway stretched ahead like a ribbon of wet asphalt under the pale moonlight.
The armored SUV hummed smoothly, cruising at eighty miles per hour.
Inside, the cabin was quiet.
Elodie had finally fallen asleep against Alma’s shoulder, her soft breathing the only sound in the back seat.
Marcus sat in the passenger seat, staring intently at the rearview monitor.
"Boss," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave.
"That motorcycle has been on our tail since we left the hotel."
Nathaniel’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror.
The single headlight flickered in the mist.
Maintaining a precise distance of fifty yards.
Never closing in.
Never falling back.
Shadowing their every turn.
"It’s not a Moriarty scout," Nathaniel observed, analyzing the rider’s posture.
"Too upright. Too precise."
"Military training," Marcus agreed, resting his hand on his concealed sidearm.
"Shall I force him off the road?"
"Not yet," Nathaniel replied calmly.
"Let's see where he wants to lead us."
The motorcycle suddenly accelerated, darting past the SUV on the left lane.
As it sped by, the rider turned his head slightly.
A glint of silver caught the dashboard light.
A ring.
Engraved with a raven crest.
Nathaniel’s heart skipped a single beat.
A ghost he thought he buried ten years ago in Eastern Europe.
"Vane," Nathaniel whispered under his breath.
"Who, boss?" Marcus asked, turning quickly.
"Someone I left for dead in Berlin," Nathaniel replied, his voice tightening.
The motorcycle pulled off at the next exit, signaling toward the abandoned industrial shipyard district near the harbor.
Flashing its taillight three times in a distinct Morse code pattern.
An old battlefield challenge.
"He wants a parley," Marcus noted.
"Or a trap," Nathaniel added.
"Pull off at the exit, Marcus."
The SUV veered right, tires hissing against the rain-slicked off-ramp.
They turned down a desolate road lined with rusting shipping containers and decaying warehouses.
At the center of an empty concrete lot stood the motorcycle.
Idling.
Exhaust smoke billowing into the cold night air.
The rider sat astride the machine, engine roaring softly like a caged beast.
Slowly, the rider dismounted.
Removed the matte black helmet.
A shock of silver hair caught the moonlight.
A scarred, grinning face framed by cold, calculating eyes.
Julian Vane.
Nathaniel stepped out of the SUV, leaving Alma and Elodie locked safely inside.
His heavy boots hit the concrete with deliberate thuds.
"I heard you went soft, Nathaniel," Vane called out over the roar of the wind.
"Settling down with maids and brutes in a fancy mansion."
Nathaniel stopped twenty paces away.
His hands rested casually at his sides.
"You should have stayed in Berlin, Julian," Nathaniel said evenly.
Vane chuckled darkly, pulling a hunting knife from his belt.
"And miss the fall of the great Rook empire?"
"Vivian was just an amateur."
"I'm the one who orchestrated the whole thing from the shadows."
"Why?" Nathaniel demanded.
"Because the throne was supposed to be mine, brother."
May you like
"And I'm here to take it back."
Cliffhanger: Before Nathaniel could draw his weapon, Vane pressed a detonator switch in his palm, and twenty tripwires lit up across the yard, surrounding the SUV in a ring of active landmines.
