Chapter 10 - Bloodlines of the Chicago SyndicateTwo weeks later, on a crisp, sunlit Saturday afternoon, Luca, Sophie, and I brought Teresa to the historic cemetery on the South Side overlooking the lake.

The cemetery was quiet, peaceful, and bathed in golden autumn light that filtered through the ancient oak trees.

We walked down a secluded gravel path until we reached a beautiful, shaded plot surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas and fragrant rosemary bushes.

Standing beneath a towering granite cross was the headstone of Luca’s father, Don Antonio Moretti:

Antonio Moretti (1950–2020) — Sovereign of the Lakes, A Father of Honor.

Fresh bouquets of white calla lilies, red roses, and fragrant sweet basil rested at the base of the stone.

Teresa stood beside her husband’s headstone, resting her hand on the carved granite, her eyes bright with tears of profound, eternal peace.

“We kept the family safe, Antonio,” Teresa whispered softly through her tears. “Our son is whole. The shadows are gone forever.”

Luca stepped forward, resting his hand respectfully on his father’s headstone.

“You can rest now, Dad,” Luca murmured, his deep baritone thick with resonant emotion. “Your house is in honorable hands. And no one will ever silence our bloodline again.”

I stood beside them, holding Sophie’s hand, feeling the crisp lake breeze ruffle our coats.

Luca turned toward me, his slate-gray eyes shining with an emotion so vast, so profound, that words were entirely unnecessary.

He stepped back onto the gravel path, dropping onto one knee before me, surrounded by the swaying oak branches and the crying of the gulls over Lake Michigan.

He opened the velvet box.

Resting inside was not a commercial diamond bought from a retail catalog.

Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, six-carat cushion-cut royal blue sapphire cradled by two delicate swallows carved from white gold—the historic engagement ring of his mother, Donna Teresa Moretti, which had been locked in the family vault for twenty years, waiting for the woman who would bring honor back to their name.

“Hannah Collins,” Luca began, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook my entire being.

“Eleven months ago, you entered my house carrying service trays to keep your sick mother in her apartment, fighting through exhaustion and fear without ever losing your dignity. You were surrounded by wealth, arrogance, and deceit, yet you never let this world tarnish the pure gold of your spirit.”

He took my hand into his massive, warm palm, his thumb gently caressing my knuckles.

“You stood before forty armed men and gave my mother her voice back. You protected my daughter with your own body, you brought light into a house of shadows, and you taught me what true power really means.”

He lifted the sapphire ring, holding it poised before my trembling finger.

“Hannah Collins, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my heart?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over my lashes, hot against my cheeks.

“Yes,” I choked out through my laughter, throwing my arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Luca! A thousand times yes!”

Luca swept me up into his arms, lifting me off the gravel, spinning me beneath the vast autumn sky before bringing his lips down onto mine in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed our destiny forever.

He slid the sapphire ring onto my finger.

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the Chicago sun.

Sophie and Teresa cheered loudly from the path, hugging each other tight, while Don Carmine Falcone raised his walking stick in celebration from the car above.
