Chapter 4 - The Medicated Water on the NightstandFive minutes later, Dr. Harris—the private family physician who had been summoned to the estate—walked into the dining hall carrying a silver tray retrieved from Teresa’s third-floor suite.

On the tray sat a small, half-empty glass carafe of water and an unlabelled amber dropper bottle found concealed beneath Vanessa’s vanity.
Dr. Harris set the tray before Luca, his face grim under the chandelier lights.
“Report, Arthur,” Luca commanded softly.
“The water in this carafe was laced with high-dose liquid haloperidol and scopolamine, Don Luca,” the physician said, his voice flat with clinical condemnation. “A central nervous system depressant and paralytic. Administered daily in small doses, it induces severe cognitive blunting, slurred speech, and motor paralysis that mimics the permanent after-effects of an ischemic stroke.”
A suffocating, primeval silence fell over the forty-six guests.
Teresa had never suffered a catastrophic second stroke.
She had been systematically poisoned, imprisoned inside her own paralyzed body for eighteen months by the woman Luca was preparing to marry, to ensure the old matriarch couldn't reveal that Vanessa was siphoning millions from the estate’s domestic trusts.
Luca’s jaw locked so violently that the skin across his cheekbones turned chalk-white.
He walked slowly across the parquet floor, stopping directly in front of the kneeling socialite.
He reached down.
With slow, measured, terrifying leverage, his large, scarred hand closed around the eight-carat emerald engagement ring on Vanessa’s left hand.
He didn't twist it violently.
He simply pulled.
The platinum band scraped dryly over her knuckle, coming free in his palm.
He turned his hand over, letting the seventy-thousand-dollar ring drop into the champagne puddle on the floorboards.
Plink.
“You told this room that Hannah wasn't qualified to treat my mother, Vanessa,” Luca whispered, each syllable dropping like an iron anvil onto stone. “Hannah was the only person in this house who realized my mother was screaming for help.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Take Vanessa Bellini down to the sub-basement cells. Place her in the adjoining vault beside Julian Sterling. When Marcus Vance arrives with the federal kidnapping and attempted murder warrants, hand her over with this chemical bottle.”
Vanessa shrieked, clawing at the floorboards, her tears soaking into the ruined silk of her dress as two armed tactical operators hauled her backward down the center aisle.

“Luca! No! You cannot marry a maid! She scrubs toilets! She has no bloodline!”
Her screams echoed through the vaulted limestone foyer until the heavy double doors slammed shut forever.
