testimony

Chapter 8 - The Interrogation at SunriseThree days later, the federal courthouse on Dearborn Street was besieged by hundreds of television cameras, journalists, and federal marshals.

Don Salvatore Bellini, his daughter Vanessa, and attorney Marcus Vance were formally arraigned on multiple counts of federal racketeering, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate money laundering.

The evidence was unassailable.

With the decrypted cloud recordings, the recovered forensic brake analysis from Sarah’s car, and the testimony provided by the Moretti logistics division, the federal judge denied bail instantly, remanding all three defendants to maximum-security holding facilities in Wisconsin and Indiana to await trial.

Their multi-million-dollar real estate holdings, their private transport fleets, and their offshore shell corporations were completely seized under federal civil forfeiture laws, with sixty percent of the liquidated capital transferred directly into the newly established Sarah Moretti Foundation for Underprivileged Youth.

Luca and I stood on the courthouse steps flanked by Dante and four private security officers.

Luca wore a bespoke black three-piece suit, his hand resting firmly on my lower back as the press shouted questions in a deafening wave:

“Mr. Moretti! Is it true that the Moretti shipping lines have entered full federal compliance?”

“Will your family cooperate with the Department of Justice on the Great Lakes maritime reform?”

Luca stepped up to the bank of microphones. The plaza immediately fell dead silent.

“The Moretti family has signed an irrevocable transparency charter with the federal government,” Luca announced, his resonant baritone carrying across the crowded street. “All of our maritime and warehousing divisions are now operating under independent federal audit. We are leaving the shadows of the past behind.”

He paused, looking directly into the lens of the lead network camera.

“My family survived five years of deceit because an honest woman refused to let my mother and daughter be erased. That courage will define the future of our name.”

He stepped back from the microphones, took my hand in his, and led me down the granite steps toward our waiting town car.

As the car pulled away into the Chicago traffic, I looked at Luca, seeing the immense, crushing weight of five years of unresolved grief and betrayal finally lifting from his shoulders.

He leaned back against the leather seat, exhaling a long, cleansing breath, and pulled me gently against his side.

“It’s over, Emma,” he whispered into my hair.

“The good part is just beginning, Luca,” I smiled against his chest.
