Chapter 5 - A Sister's Life Bought in Gold

Gabriel nodded once.
He looked down at the weeping socialite with eyes that held no more warmth than the frozen mud beneath the pier.
“You fired Maya tonight, Camilla,” Gabriel whispered. “You told her she belonged in the scullery because she refused to let a predator touch her hip.”
He reached into his pocket and produced an antique leather portfolio stamped with the golden seal of the State of New York.
He laid it gently on my lap.
“What is this, Mr. Thorne?” I whispered, looking down at the heavy parchment.
“Open it, Maya,” he smiled gently.
I opened the folder.
Inside lay an official decree from the Kings County Chancery Court:
THE LIN FAMILY HEALTHCARE AND HOUSING ENDOWMENT.
Attached to the decree was the canceled mortgage deed for a historic three-story brownstone in Brooklyn Heights, paid in full in perpetuity, alongside an irrevocable ten-million-dollar medical trust established in my mother’s name at Mount Sinai Hospital, providing private round-the-clock nephrology care and immediate transplant placement.
Tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude blurred my vision, spilling hot and fast down my cheeks.
“Mr. Thorne... Gabriel... ten million dollars? A brownstone? Private dialysis?” I wept, pressing my trembling hands against my mouth. “I could work ten lifetimes and never earn a fraction of this—”
“You don't repay family, Maya,” Gabriel whispered, reaching out with his warm, calloused hand, gently wiping away a tear from my cheekbone with his thumb.
The touch was so tender, so completely at odds with the man who had just broken Arthur Vance’s jaw, that my heart hammered violently against my ribs.
“You stood before thirty-five armed men and spoke the truth when everyone else looked away,” he murmured, his dark obsidian eyes searching mine with fierce, unyielding devotion. “You protected your sister with your own body. In my world, that kind of courage is answered with an empire.”
He turned back to the room, his baritone booming across the vaulted library with imperial authority.
“Marcus.”
“Yes, boss.”
“Take Camilla Laurent down to the holding cells beneath Pier 8. Place her in the adjoining cell beside Arthur and Julian Vance. When Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance arrives at midnight, hand them over with the unredacted ledgers.”
Camilla shrieked, clawing at the carpet, her tears soaking into the wool as two armed guards hauled her backward out of the library, her frantic, ugly screams echoing through the corridors until the heavy oak doors clicked shut forever.
Silence returned to the grand library.
Pure, clean, and vast.
Gabriel stood up from the head of the table.
He walked over to where my sister and I were sitting.
He knelt down on one knee before Chloe’s chair, his massive, scarred frame bringing his eyes level with hers.
His large hand reached out, infinite gentleness softening his knuckles as he touched the soft wool of her blanket.
“You are safe now, Chloe,” Gabriel murmured softly, his baritone rough with an emotion no mobster had ever seen in him. “No man will ever lay a hand on you again. No man will ever make you feel afraid under this sky.”
Chloe looked at him through her tears, her lip trembling. “Thank you, Mr. Thorne... thank you for stopping them.”
Gabriel reached into his pocket and produced a small velvet jewelry box.
He opened it, revealing Chloe’s broken silver hair clip, which his private jeweler had already repaired with solid platinum wire, the silver polished until it shone like a mirror.
He handed it to her with a gentle smile.

“Keep your hair pinned high, Chloe. You are under the shield of this house now.”
