Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Bellini CartelBy late November, the restructuring of the Moretti enterprise had become the gold standard of corporate transformation in the Midwest.

Under Luca’s leadership, seventy percent of the former Bellini shipping routes were legally integrated into the newly chartered Moretti Maritime Corporation, operating under federal environmental and labor compliance.
Over four thousand dockworkers, warehouse staff, and freight drivers received permanent pension protections, comprehensive health benefits, and a thirty percent wage increase.
Meanwhile, at the Moretti mansion, the cold, imposing atmosphere had undergone a magnificent transformation.
The dark, heavy velvet drapes that had kept the mansion gloomy for years were replaced with light cream linen curtains that let the autumn sunlight pour into every room.
Mrs. Moretti’s physical therapy was progressing with astonishing speed.
With the help of specialized speech therapists and the peace of mind that came from knowing she was safe in her own home, she began speaking again—starting with short sentences, her raspy, gentle voice filling the hallways with warmth.
One afternoon, I walked into the newly renovated sunroom overlooking the gardens.
Mrs. Moretti was sitting in an armchair beside the window, knitting a soft blue baby blanket, while my sister Lily was sprawled on the rug doing her algebra homework.
“Claire,” Mrs. Moretti said, her voice clear, steady, and filled with melodic sweetness.
I stopped, a brilliant smile breaking across my face as I walked over and kissed her cheek.
“Your voice sounds stronger every day, Mrs. Moretti.”
“Call me Elena, sweetheart,” she smiled, patting my hand with her warm fingers. “After all, you’re not the maid anymore.”
She looked toward the doorway.
Luca was standing in the archway, his hands in his pockets, watching us with an expression of quiet, profound adoration.
“How are my three favorite ladies doing?” Luca teased softly, walking into the room.
Lily looked up from her textbook with a playful grin. “Luca, tell Claire she has to let me adopt the golden retriever from the shelter!”
Luca laughed—a rich, deep sound that filled the room.
“The puppy is already approved, Lily. Antonio is picking him up from the rescue center tomorrow morning.”
Lily squealed with joy, throwing her arms around Luca’s waist before running upstairs to set up the dog bed.
Elena smiled, shook her head fondly, and picked up her knitting needles.

Luca turned to me, catching my hand, his gray eyes shining with an unmistakable, tender intention.
“Come with me to the terrace, Claire. There’s something I need to show you.”
