Chapter 6 - Shadows on Lake Shore DriveBy 2:00 AM, the estate had become an impenetrable fortress under siege.

Black SUVs carrying tactical enforcers lined the perimeter driveways, their engines rumbling in low, menacing vibrations.

In the grand library on the first floor, Federal Prosecutor Marcus Vance sat across from Luca at the massive walnut desk, reviewing the ledgers with three senior forensic accountants from the Department of Justice.

Vance was a silver-haired, sharp-eyed attorney who had spent a decade fighting the Chicago syndicates. He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking up from the documents with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe.

“Luca,” Vance said, his voice deep and measured. “This is the most comprehensive paper trail of cross-border money laundering I have seen in twenty-five years on the bench. There are sixteen federal judges, three state senators, and twenty-two port commissioners documented in these ledgers.”

“I don't care about the politicians, Marcus,” Luca replied evenly, leaning back in his leather chair. “I want Don Salvatore Bellini in a federal cell before dawn. I want every asset, every warehouse, and every vessel owned by that family seized under RICO statutes.”

“And your family?” Vance asked, his eyes narrowing slightly. “What do you expect in return?”

Luca placed his hand flat against the desk.

“Total immunity for my mother’s estate, and the complete, certified return of the legitimate shipping terminals that my father chartered thirty years ago. The Moretti family is exiting the gray logistics corridors permanently. We are converting our operations into a fully audited commercial freight corporation.”

Vance looked at the stack of evidence, then looked at Luca. He extended a firm, leather-gloved hand.

“You have a deal, Moretti. We raid the Bellini compound in Lake Forest within the hour.”

Just then, a sharp commotion broke out in the outer vestibule.

The heavy library doors burst open.

Antonio hurried into the room, his weapon drawn, his breathing ragged.

“Boss! A convoy of three unmarked black vans just breached the secondary outer gate on the service road! They’re using military-grade thermite charges on the perimeter fence!”

Luca sprang to his feet, his chair skidding backward.

“Don Salvatore,” Luca growled, his eyes darkening to absolute pitch. “He realized his children were compromised. He’s sent a clean-up crew to wipe out the estate before the feds can take custody.”

He turned to me as I stood beside Mrs. Moretti’s wheelchair by the fireplace.

“Claire, take my mother down into the fortified safe room behind the study bookcase. Now!”

Before I could turn the wheelchair, the sound of heavy automatic gunfire tore through the grand salon windows, shattering stained glass into a thousand glittering shards across the Persian rugs.
