Chapter 1 - The Silver Napkin Warning

The moment my fingers slid the folded slip of paper beneath the heavy linen napkin on Adrian Cross’s table, the air in the private dining room seemed to drop ten degrees. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, each thud loud enough that I feared everyone at the table could hear it. Vanessa Whitmore’s eyes hadn't left mine. Up close, her gaze didn't hold the warm, vacant charm she projected for Chicago’s high-society gossip columns; it was clinical, calculating, and suddenly razor-sharp.
Adrian didn't move immediately. He remained leaning back in his tailored charcoal suit, one hand lazily resting beside his crystal wineglass, his posture radiating a terrifying kind of relaxed dominance. The stranger in the newly hired kitchen whites had already paused two steps away, holding the silver domed platter containing whatever lethal delicacy had been prepared for the city's most untouchable man.
"Excuse me, miss," Vanessa’s voice cut through the soft jazz playing overhead like fine crystal breaking. It was smooth, honeyed, yet coated with an unmistakable frost. "You dropped something under my husband-to-be’s place setting."
Time fractured. I kept my face smooth—the practiced, invisible mask of a service worker who had spent years learning how to blend into wallpaper. "My apologies, ma'am," I murmured, keeping my voice level, though my palms were slick with sweat. "Just clearing the table crumbs."

Before Vanessa could summon the floor manager with a flick of her manicured wrist, Adrian’s long, scarred fingers lifted the linen napkin. His dark, impenetrable eyes scanned the six words I had scrawled in haste: Your fiancée set a trap. Leave now.
For one agonizing heartbeat, nothing happened. Then, the heavy atmosphere in Blackthorn House shifted from tension to absolute, predatory stillness. Adrian didn't look at Vanessa. He didn't look at me. His gaze locked onto the fake server standing three feet away—and in that split second, the predator finally bared his teeth.
