Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Ledger

The heavy mahogany desk became my battlefield. Within ten minutes, Adrian’s tech specialists had unlocked Vanessa’s encrypted tablet and mirrored its contents onto the massive wall display. Thousands of lines of offshore transactions, shell companies, and illicit wire transfers began scrolling down the screen.

Vanessa went completely rigid in her chair, her face turning the color of ash. "You can't touch those files! Those are protected under international corporate—"

"Corporate law doesn't apply when you're caught orchestrating a murder inside an active federal investigation zone," Adrian cut her off, his voice flat and deadpan. He walked over to stand behind my chair, leaning in just enough that I could catch the faint scent of sandalwood and expensive cologne. "Show me what you found, Mara."

My fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. My accounting background wasn't just about balancing corporate ledgers; it was about finding where dishonest people tried to hide their sins. Within minutes, highlighted rows began blinking in a furious crimson across the screen.

"Look here," I pointed to a series of recurring wire transfers routed through a Cayman Islands shell company named Apex Logistics. "These aren't shipping manifests. They're payoffs. Over the last six months, millions of dollars have been funneled from your personal accounts directly into accounts controlled by Marcus Vance and federal prosecutor David Sterling."

Adrian’s expression darkened into something lethal. The temperature in the room plummeted. He looked down at Vanessa, who was now trembling with undisguised terror.

"Sterling," Adrian whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "So the Department of Justice’s golden boy was on the Whitmore payroll all along."

"He was going to indict you by Friday," Vanessa spat out, her mask of civility completely shattered. "You would have gone away for life, and our family would have absorbed your entire portfolio for pennies on the dollar! It was just business, Adrian!"

"No," Adrian replied softly, straightening up and adjusting his cuffs. "Business is negotiating a fair price. What you did was treason. And in my world, treason has a very specific price tag."
