Chapter 9 - A New Empire

Two weeks had passed since the night at Blackthorn House, and the front pages of every major newspaper in the country still buzzed with the spectacular downfall of the Whitmore dynasty and the corruption scandal that swept through the federal prosecutor's office. Marcus Vance and his associates were locked away behind bars awaiting federal trial, and Vanessa Whitmore had vanished into total obscurity overseas.

My life, however, had undergone a seismic shift.

My mother’s medical bills were fully cleared, my younger brother Owen had been enrolled in a top-tier private academy with a full scholarship, and my old boss at APT Media had sent three groveling text messages begging me to reconsider my employment status—messages I left permanently unread.

Instead, I sat on the leather executive chair on the top floor of the newly rebranded Cross-Bennett Financial Tower, reviewing international shipping manifests and asset allocations. My title wasn't waitress anymore; it was Chief Risk Analyst and Director of Internal Security.

The office door clicked open, and Adrian walked in, carrying two cups of artisan dark roast coffee. He set one down on my gleaming glass desk without breaking stride.

"You've been staring at those spreadsheets for three hours straight," Adrian noted, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Even top-tier accountants need to breathe."

"I'm just making sure the European logistics pipeline is completely airtight," I replied, taking a sip of the coffee and looking up at him. "Your previous auditors were cutting corners on customs declarations in Rotterdam. If I hadn't caught it today, federal trade regulators would have frozen our shipments by next Tuesday."

Adrian pulled up a chair opposite my desk, resting his arms on the surface. "You know, when you slipped that napkin under my plate two weeks ago, I thought you were just a clever waitress trying to win a tip."

"And now?" I challenged, raising an eyebrow.

"Now," Adrian said softly, his dark eyes holding mine with absolute intensity, "I realize you're the only person in Chicago who is actually dangerous enough to keep me alive."
