Chapter 8 - Collateral and Cleanup

Back in the private parlor, the silence was suffocating. Vanessa had slumped back into her chair, dry-sobbing as the reality of her ruined life finally set in. Her family’s shipping empire, built over four decades, was evaporating in real time as federal agents—tipped off by Adrian’s digital counter-offensive—raided the Whitmore corporate headquarters downtown.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and two senior security officers entered, saluting Adrian crisply. "Boss, Vance's men surrendered without firing a shot. The federal marshals are downstairs waiting to take custody of Marcus and federal prosecutor Sterling, who was just picked up at his residence."

"Hand them over," Adrian said without looking back. "And escort Miss Whitmore to the service exit. Ensure she is put into a cab with a one-way ticket out of Illinois. I never want to see her face in this city again."

Vanessa stood up, her eyes wide with a mixture of hatred and lingering terror. She glared at me as she passed my chair. "You think you've won, you little nobody," she hissed under her breath. "He doesn't keep people like us around. You're just a disposable tool."

"At least I'm not a footnote," I replied softly, not breaking her gaze.

She turned and fled, flanked by two guards who treated her departure with the ceremony of taking out the trash.

When the doors clicked shut, the room felt instantly lighter. Adrian walked over to the wet bar, poured a fresh glass of bourbon, and finally took a long, slow sip. He turned around, leaning against the counter, and looked directly at me.

"She wasn't entirely wrong about one thing," Adrian said quietly.

My guard instantly went back up. "What's that?"

"In my world, tools usually get discarded once the job is done." He walked slowly across the room, stopping just an arm's length away. Up close, his presence was overwhelming—a blend of raw power and sharp, calculating intelligence. "Fortunately, I'm expanding my operations. And I happen to need someone who can see through lies before they're even spoken."
