Chapter 10 - The Man Who Kept the Secret

Nathan Pike was arrested at a truck stop outside Columbus, Ohio. He attempted to flee, then surrendered when officers blocked his vehicle. In the rear compartment they found surveillance equipment, cash, and photographs of Caroline taken over several years.

They also found pictures of Lily at the safe cottage.

My blood ran cold when Alvarez told me. The protected location had been compromised. Within hours, she coordinated a move to a new confidential site and tightened access to the case. Lily thought we were going on a surprise trip. I helped pack Buttons and her crayons while my hands shook.

"Why are you sad?" she asked.

"Because I wish things were easier for you."

"Mommy says hard days end."

"She sounds very wise."

Lily gave a serious nod. "She is."

Pike denied harming Caroline. His lawyer challenged the search, and Alvarez refused to make promises about what a judge would allow. But investigators had his phone records, vehicle logs, and the contents of a rented storage unit.

He eventually agreed to provide a statement with counsel present.

He said Marcus hired him to find Caroline and recover the files. Three years earlier, Pike had intercepted her at the greenhouse. Caroline had persuaded him to let her leave after showing him that Marcus intended to eliminate anyone who could trace the recordings.

"Why would he believe her?" Alvarez asked.

"Because I found my own name on the list," Pike said.

He admitted arranging a hiding place and occasionally passing warnings to Caroline, though he continued accepting money from Marcus for false surveillance reports. His story implicated him in obstruction and intimidation, not mercy alone.

"Where is Caroline now?" Alvarez asked.

"She stopped trusting me when my men followed the kid. I didn't know they were going to do it."

The last time Pike spoke to Caroline, she said she was going to a church where her mother once volunteered. She used the phrase blue doors. Investigators identified three churches that fit the description. Volunteers checked them discreetly while authorities worked to keep the search from the press.

At home, I received a message from Emily through her lawyer. She offered to reveal Caroline's location if I signed an agreement transferring my voting shares into a trust she controlled. In return, she would "help this unfortunate misunderstanding go away."

I gave the message to Alvarez.

Emily's attorney subsequently withdrew from representing her in the negotiations. Whatever her lawyers knew, they could see the danger in bargaining over a missing person.

I finally understood the mechanism of the trap. Emily didn't need to own my company outright. She needed to make me desperate enough to hand her control.

The following morning, federal investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Marcus on financial and obstruction charges. He had vanished the night before.

A camera near his last known residence caught him entering a gray SUV.

Beside the driver sat a woman in a hood.

For one terrible moment, I thought it was Caroline.

Then she turned toward the camera.

It was Emily.
