Chapter 1 - The Hands She Was Told to Hide

"Vanessa claimed the little girl was just being stubborn, right up until the nine-year-old’s trembling hands revealed the sick lie she was told about why her father didn’t want her anymore.
""""""**“STOP WAVING YOUR HANDS! YOU'RE EMBARRASSING ME!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE WHISPERED TO HIS DEAF NINE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER DURING THEIR ENGAGEMENT DINNER. THE LITTLE GIRL IMMEDIATELY FOLDED HER HANDS BENEATH THE TABLE AND LOWERED HER HEAD. BUT WHEN I SECRETLY ASKED HER IN SIGN LANGUAGE WHY SHE WAS CRYING, SHE SIGNED SIX WORDS THAT MADE MY BLOOD RUN COLD: “SHE SAID DADDY WANTS ME GONE.”**
""""""""Keep your hands still, Isabella.""""""""
Vanessa Bellini smiled sweetly at the guests.
But beneath the elegant dinner table, her voice was cold.
Nine-year-old Isabella Moretti sat in a pale blue silk dress, surrounded by fifty wealthy guests.
Her dark hair was tied with a white satin ribbon.
She was beautiful.
Quiet.
And completely terrified.
Isabella had been deaf since early childhood.
She communicated primarily through American Sign Language.
Her father had spent years learning to sign so they could talk about everything.
School.
Her favorite books.
The little things that made her happy.
But tonight, Vanessa had forbidden her from signing at the table.
""""""""People are trying to enjoy dinner,"""""""" Vanessa whispered. """"""""Stop making yourself the center of attention.""""""""
Isabella's eyes filled.
She slowly placed both hands in her lap.
Then nodded.
Vanessa smiled.
""""""""Good girl.""""""""
I stood nearby holding a silver serving tray.
My name is Claire Bennett.
I had worked for the Moretti family for almost two years.
And because my younger brother was deaf, I knew sign language fluently.
I had watched Isabella change over the past several weeks.
She stopped signing excitedly when her father entered a room.
Stopped asking questions at dinner.
And whenever Vanessa approached, she immediately hid her hands.
At first, I thought she was simply nervous about the engagement.
But then I discovered why.
***
Three days before the party, I'd found Isabella sitting alone in the library.
She was staring at a picture book.
Her hands rested motionless in her lap.
I sat beside her.
Then signed:
Are you okay, sweetheart?
Her face immediately brightened.
She signed back:
Can we talk?
I smiled.
Of course.
She glanced toward the doorway.
Then signed:
Vanessa says Daddy doesn't like it when I use my hands.
My stomach tightened.
Your father loves talking with you.
Isabella shook her head.
She says people think it looks strange.
I stared at her.
Then she signed something that broke my heart.
She says I should learn to be normal before the wedding.
I gently took her hand.
There is nothing wrong with the way you communicate.
Her eyes filled.
But before she could answer, Vanessa appeared.
""""""""Claire.""""""""
I stood.
""""""""Yes, ma'am?""""""""
Vanessa looked at Isabella's moving hands.
Her smile vanished.
""""""""I've asked you not to encourage this behavior.""""""""
I swallowed.
""""""""Miss Bellini, she's just talking.""""""""
Vanessa folded her arms.
""""""""Then she can learn to communicate in a less distracting way.""""""""
Isabella lowered her head.
Vanessa turned toward me.
""""""""And if you keep interfering with how I prepare her for the wedding, I'll find another housekeeper.""""""""
I thought about the money I sent home every month.
My mother's expenses.
The job I couldn't afford to lose.
So I said nothing.
But Isabella had understood enough.
She looked at me.
And silently signed:
I'm sorry.
***
The engagement dinner was held on Saturday evening.
The mansion glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.
White roses covered the tables.
A string quartet played beside the grand staircase.
Vanessa wore a fitted red satin gown.
Luca Moretti wore a perfectly tailored black suit.
Tall.
Muscular.
Dark tattoos climbed his neck and covered his hands.
In Chicago, powerful men feared Luca Moretti.
But with Isabella, he was simply Daddy.
He always signed I love you before leaving for work.
And Isabella always signed it back.
Until recently.
That evening, Luca arrived late from a business meeting.
He approached his daughter.
Smiled.
And signed:
Hello, Peanut. Did you miss me?
Isabella's face lit up.
Her hands immediately lifted.
But then she saw Vanessa watching.
She froze.
Slowly lowered her hands.
And nodded without signing anything.
Luca frowned.
""""""""Baby?""""""""
Vanessa laughed.
""""""""Oh, darling, she's being shy.""""""""
He looked confused.
""""""""Since when?""""""""
Vanessa touched his arm.
""""""""She's growing up. You can't expect her to want to sign with you every minute.""""""""
Luca looked toward Isabella.
The little girl stared at her plate.
Something in his expression changed.
But before he could ask another question, the engagement toast began.
***
Vanessa stood beside the microphone.
""""""""Thank you all for joining us tonight.""""""""
The guests applauded.
She smiled.
""""""""And I especially want to thank Isabella for welcoming me into her family.""""""""
Everyone turned toward the little girl.
Isabella looked up.
Vanessa continued.
""""""""Unfortunately, she's been having some difficulty adjusting.""""""""
Luca frowned.
Vanessa gave a sad little smile.
""""""""She's been refusing to participate in family conversations and sometimes ignores me completely.""""""""
Several guests exchanged glances.
Isabella's eyes widened.
She immediately began signing.
That's not true.
Vanessa turned.
""""""""Isabella.""""""""
The little girl stopped.
Vanessa smiled tightly.
""""""""Hands down, sweetheart.""""""""
Isabella's chin trembled.
Then she slowly folded her hands beneath the table.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
I couldn't stand it anymore.
I set down my serving tray.
Approached her.
And knelt beside her chair.
I quietly signed:
Sweetheart, why aren't you telling Daddy what's wrong?
Isabella looked toward Vanessa.
Then back at me.
Her hands trembled.
Finally, she signed:
She said Daddy wants me gone.
My heart stopped.
I stared at her.
Who told you that?
Isabella began crying.
Then signed:
Vanessa says Daddy is tired of having a deaf daughter.
I felt sick.
Before I could respond, a deep voice interrupted us.
""""""""Claire.""""""""
I looked up.
Luca Moretti was standing beside the table.
His expression was unreadable.
""""""""What is my daughter telling you?""""""""
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
""""""""Luca, don't encourage this. She's just looking for attention.""""""""
But I was already standing.
My hands were trembling.
""""""""Mr. Moretti...""""""""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
""""""""Claire.""""""""
I swallowed.
Then looked directly at Luca.
""""""""Sir, your daughter isn't refusing to communicate. Miss Bellini has been forbidding her from using sign language.""""""""
The ballroom went silent.
Luca slowly turned toward Vanessa.
""""""""What?""""""""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
""""""""That's ridiculous.""""""""
I continued.
""""""""She's been telling Isabella that signing embarrasses the family.""""""""
Luca's expression hardened.
Vanessa shook her head.
""""""""I was only trying to help her become more independent.""""""""
He stared at her.
""""""""Independent?""""""""
""""""""Yes.""""""""
Luca looked toward Isabella.
The little girl was crying silently.
Her hands remained hidden beneath the table.
Then he crouched beside her.
And signed:
Peanut, look at me.
Isabella lifted her eyes.
He signed again.
Has Vanessa been telling you not to use your hands?
For several seconds, she didn't answer.
Then she nodded.
Luca's jaw tightened.
Why didn't you tell me?
Isabella's hands began trembling.
She signed slowly.
She said you wanted a normal family.
For a moment, Luca stopped moving.
The little girl continued.
She said after the wedding, I might have to live somewhere else because I'm too difficult.
His expression changed completely.
Then Isabella signed something that brought tears to my eyes.
** *Daddy, I tried to stop signing so you wouldn't be ashamed of me.* **
Luca closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he reached for his daughter's hands.
And gently lifted them from beneath the table.
Peanut, he signed, look at me.
She was crying now.
He continued:
I learned your language because I wanted to understand you.
A tear slipped down his cheek.
Your hands have never embarrassed me.
Isabella's face crumpled.
Then she signed:
Even when everyone is watching?
Luca nodded.
Especially then.
***
Vanessa stepped forward.
""""""""Luca, please. You're making this into something it isn't.""""""""
He slowly stood.
""""""""What exactly were you trying to teach my daughter?""""""""
Vanessa folded her arms.
""""""""That she can't expect the whole world to accommodate her.""""""""
He stared at her.
""""""""She's nine.""""""""
""""""""I know.""""""""
""""""""She's deaf.""""""""
""""""""Obviously.""""""""
""""""""And you decided the solution was to stop her from communicating?""""""""
Vanessa looked away.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the senior housekeeper approached.
""""""""Mr. Moretti?""""""""
Luca turned.
""""""""Yes?""""""""
""""""""There's something else.""""""""
Vanessa immediately stiffened.
Mrs. Carter continued.
""""""""Miss Bellini instructed the photographer not to include Isabella in any pictures where she was signing.""""""""
Luca went completely still.
""""""""What?""""""""
The photographer reluctantly stepped forward.
""""""""She told me to wait until the little girl's hands were completely still.""""""""
Vanessa's face paled.
He continued.
""""""""And if Isabella couldn't remain still, I was supposed to photograph the couple without her.""""""""
The silence was unbearable.
Luca slowly looked toward Vanessa.
""""""""You weren't helping her adjust.""""""""
Vanessa shook her head.
""""""""You don't understand.""""""""
He glanced toward Isabella.
Then back at his fiancée.
""""""""You were trying to make my daughter invisible in her own family.""""""""
Vanessa began crying.
""""""""I just wanted a perfect wedding.""""""""
Luca stared at her.
Then slowly removed his engagement ring.
He placed it beside her champagne glass.
""""""""The wedding is canceled.""""""""
Vanessa froze.
""""""""Luca!""""""""
He didn't raise his voice.
""""""""You don't get to marry me while teaching my daughter to be ashamed of who she is.""""""""
***
After the guests left, Isabella sat beside Luca on the enormous living room sofa.
Her little blue dress was wrinkled.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
But her hands were no longer hidden.
Luca sat facing her.
He began signing.
I'm sorry I didn't notice sooner.
Isabella looked at him.
Then signed:
Are you sad the wedding is over?
He nodded gently.
A little.
Her face fell.
She signed:
Because of me?
Luca immediately shook his head.
No, Peanut.
He reached for her hands.
You are not the reason our family is broken.
Her eyes filled.
You are the reason I know what kind of family I want.
Isabella began crying again.
Then she signed one last question.
** *Daddy, if you marry someone someday, will I have to stop using my hands when we eat dinner?* **
Luca's expression broke.
He gently kissed her forehead.
Then signed:
Never.
Isabella swallowed.
Even if the guests stare?
He smiled through his tears.
Then they can watch me sign with you.
For the first time in weeks, Isabella smiled.
She lifted both hands.
And signed the words she'd been afraid to use all evening.
I love you, Daddy.
Luca pulled her into his arms.
May you like
Then signed back:
** *I love you more, Peanut. And you will never have to be silent to belong in this family.* **"""""
