Chapter 10 - The Empire Built on Secrets

Luca summoned his company's board the following morning.

I wasn't part of the meeting. I was a housekeeper with an increasingly complicated life, and my priority remained Isabella. Still, I saw what the investigation did to him.

He stopped sleeping. He stared at invoices during breakfast. He missed a planned school pickup once, then apologized to his daughter instead of pretending it didn't matter.

That apology was new.

Adults make mistakes, Isabella signed after he explained. But you came back.

He kissed her forehead.

Always.

The accountant found a long history of questionable transfers and forged approvals. Luca agreed to cooperate with investigators and to separate himself from company decisions under review. He hired outside leadership to protect employees whose livelihoods depended on the business.

"If I say I want a better future for Isabella," he told me, "I have to build one she can actually inherit without fear."

I had never heard him talk about his empire that way.

Not as a source of power.

As a responsibility.

Meanwhile, the newspapers were beginning to investigate Senator Bellini's relationship with New Horizons. Public filings showed that donors connected to the Bellini family had supported the organization while its leadership pursued Isabella's trust.

A reporter called me three times.

I refused to discuss a child's private life.

On the fourth call, the reporter said, "We have proof Miss Bellini tried to bribe you."

I froze.

"You mean the Seattle job offer?"

"The hotel says it never issued that letter."

I forwarded the information to Rachel.

The forged offer became another matter for investigators. Every new disclosure made the original cruelty at dinner look less isolated, more calculated.

Yet I knew something the headlines didn't.

Vanessa's words had injured Isabella long before anyone tried to profit from her future.

Money explained motive. It did not erase the harm.

One afternoon, Isabella found me watching a sign-language storytelling video in the library. She leaned over my shoulder, fascinated.

Could kids at my school do that?

Tell stories in ASL? Of course.

Could hearing kids learn?

Absolutely.

She brightened. I want to teach them.

Her idea grew into a modest school club, organized with teachers and deaf-community educators rather than as a publicity event. Children who knew no sign language learned introductions. Others shared stories in different languages and communication styles.

Luca volunteered to attend the first meeting, but Isabella stopped him.

You can come as Dad, she signed. Not as a famous person.

He laughed. Those are my favorite terms.

At the meeting, I watched a shy boy sign his name for the first time. Isabella applauded with her hands raised, her fingers fluttering in the air.

No one asked her to lower them.

That night, Luca and I walked through the garden.

"I think about you when you're not around," he said suddenly.

I stopped walking.

"Luca."

"I know I'm your employer. I know my life is complicated. I don't want to use gratitude or the position I'm in to make you feel obligated."

His honesty hurt and comforted me at once.

"Then don't," I whispered.

He nodded slowly.

"I want to get the legal mess settled. And I want you to be able to make choices about your own work before we talk about anything else."

I looked toward the warmly lit house.

"I want that, too."

May you like

We continued walking without touching.

For the first time, the distance between us felt like care instead of rejection.
