Chapter 8 - The Night the Truth Tried to Escape

Luca wanted to drive to the airport himself.

Rachel stopped him with one sentence.

"You cannot protect Isabella by becoming the story her enemies want to tell."

He stood motionless, his keys in his fist. Then he set them down.

Law enforcement had already been alerted to the financial evidence and the recording device. Officers handling the investigation would determine whether an intervention was justified. Luca couldn't buy justice, command it, or intimidate it into appearing.

For a man accustomed to solving problems with a single phone call, waiting was agony.

I sat with him in the kitchen. The rest of the house had fallen asleep.

"I'm not good at this," he admitted.

"At what?"

"Being powerless."

"You aren't powerless. You can stay. You can tell the truth. You can let the people trained to handle this do their jobs."

He rubbed a hand across his face.

"You make it sound easy."

"I never said it was easy."

Near midnight, Rachel called. Nico had been questioned after investigators received new information, but Vanessa was not in custody. She had retained counsel and denied wrongdoing.

The developments offered no quick victory. They did, however, produce one extraordinary piece of evidence.

A confidential source had provided a copy of a private meeting recording in which Nico discussed the plan to transfer Isabella to New Horizons. Rachel would seek to authenticate it properly before using it.

In the recording, Nico reportedly referred to Isabella as "the easiest route to the trust."

I watched Luca absorb those words.

"He attended her sixth birthday," he whispered. "He helped her build a snowman."

I didn't know what to say.

"He knew exactly how much she loved that penguin," Luca continued. "The one he brought when Sofia was alive."

Betrayal was not just the moment trust broke. It was the way every happy memory suddenly looked different.

"You don't have to forgive him," I said.

"I don't know how I could."

"Then don't make any promises tonight."

He reached for my hand. His palm was warm, scarred, and unexpectedly careful.

"Claire, I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't spoken up at that dinner."

"You would have found out eventually."

"Maybe. Maybe after she stopped telling me anything."

I looked down at our joined hands.

"She's telling you now."

He nodded.

"Yes. She is."

We might have remained there until morning if Mrs. Carter hadn't appeared in the doorway.

"Forgive me," she said, "but Isabella is asking for you both."

Upstairs, Isabella sat in bed with a notebook on her knees.

I had a bad dream, she signed.

Luca sat beside her. Want to tell us?

Vanessa was taking away all the doors. I couldn't get to you.

He held her close.

There will always be a way to reach me.

Isabella looked from her father to me.

Then she signed a question that made my heart stumble.

Claire, are you my family, too?

I didn't answer immediately. I understood what an answer could mean to a child whose trust had already been damaged.

I care about you very much, I signed. Family can include people who choose to love and show up. But we should never rush promises about the future.

She considered that.

May you like

Then she hugged me, too.

From the hallway, Mrs. Carter quietly closed the door.
