Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Sterling Consortium

The following month was a whirlwind of joyous celebration, international exhibitions, and profound healing.

Under Maeve’s direction, the De Luca Gemological Trust hosted the annual International Lapidary Congress at the newly opened maritime academy, bringing together master diamond cutters, jewelry historians, and museum curators from forty nations.

There were no corrupt cartel barons whispering in corners. No hitmen checking concealed weapons beneath their jackets.

The guests gathered beneath the soaring glass atriums represented the true, honorable heart of the new era:

Master craftsmen and apprentice jewelers from Antwerp and Idar-Oberstein sitting alongside cargo crane operators, dockworkers, and port administrators.

Former syndicate captains, wearing clean bespoke tuxedos, sitting respectfully beside cultural preservationists and charity directors.

At the front of the exhibition hall, standing proudly beside the glass display case containing the imperial tiara, was seventy-two-year-old Thomas, wearing a clean bespoke suit, laughing heartily as he demonstrated facet-alignment techniques to young students.

Matteo and Maeve stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the bustling floor.

Matteo wore an immaculate black three-piece suit, his hand resting firmly on the small of Maeve’s back.

Maeve wore a floor-length gown of deep emerald silk, her shoulders bare and unblemished, the faint silver mark on her back healed into an invisible memory, the Star of Mandalay catching the ambient light in flashes of crimson brilliance.

“Happy, my love?” Matteo whispered into her ear.

Maeve leaned back against the broad, solid warmth of his chest, smiling down at the laughing craftsmen below.

“More than happy, Matteo,” she whispered back. “We gave the stones their honor back.”

Matteo reached into his pocket and produced an antique platinum signet ring engraved with the coiled viper and anchor crest of the De Luca dynasty.

He slid the ring onto her thumb, where it rested securely beside her wedding band.

“And you gave this house its soul back, Maeve,” he murmured, lifting her hand to his lips to press a tender kiss against her knuckles. “Now let’s go show our guests how a true Donna rules.”
