Chapter 9 - The Broken Gold Sequins

The following two weeks were a whirlwind of historic legal restitution, corporate restructuring, and international acclaim.

Under Maeve’s direction, the De Luca Gemological Trust was established with an eighty-million-dollar endowment, dedicated to providing fair-wage certifications, health benefits, and safety equipment for artisanal gem miners and apprentice cutters across South America and Southeast Asia.

The historic workshop in the Miami design district was completely renovated, with forty master benches installed under natural full-spectrum lighting, fully funded by the seized Vance assets.

Thomas, the elderly jeweler who had defended Maeve on the yacht, was appointed Master Craftsman Emeritus, with an independent research budget and a lifetime salary.

The domestic staff, deckhands, and junior lapidaries who had once lived under the arbitrary cruelty of patrons like Camille Vance were given permanent employment contracts with full union protections under the newly chartered De Luca Maritime Accord.

One sunny Saturday morning in late October, the Miami air was crisp and warm, carrying the sweet scent of saltwater and blooming bougainvillea.

Maeve walked into the grand kitchen of the De Luca waterfront villa on Star Island, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater and tailored slacks.

The kitchen was filled with the rich aromas of simmering espresso, fresh guava pastries, and warm sourdough bread.

Mrs. Gable, the senior housekeeper, was setting the marble island with fresh sliced mangoes and silver carafes.

“Good morning, Donna Maeve,” Mrs. Gable greeted her warmly, bowing her head with deep, affectionate respect. “Don Matteo has been in the private gallery since sunrise. He requested that you join him when you awoke.”

Maeve smiled, kissing the old woman’s cheek. “Thank you, Mrs. Gable.”

She walked down the sunlit corridor into the villa’s private art gallery.

The room had floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay.

At the center of the gallery stood an antique pedestal of white Carrara marble, illuminated by a single, focused ray of morning sunlight.

Resting on the pedestal was the historic imperial tiara that Maeve had spent nine weeks hand-polishing.

At the very center of the platinum arch, flanked by fifty-four matched diamonds, sat the Star of Mandalay—the raw Burmese ruby, cut into a breathtaking, sixty-carat cushion-shaped masterpiece that caught the morning light in blinding, fiery ribbons of crimson.

Footsteps sounded softly on the polished terrazzo floor.

Matteo walked out from the shadowed terrace, wearing an open-collared navy linen shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed, powerful, and breathtakingly handsome.

He stopped behind Maeve, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his solid, warm chest.

He buried his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.

“Vanilla, sea salt, and polished platinum,” he murmured against her skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine. “The only scent I ever want to come home to.”

Maeve leaned back against him, looping her arms over his, smiling at the reflection of the tiara in the glass.

“It’s finished, Matteo,” she whispered. “My father’s work is finally complete.”

Matteo reached forward, his large, scarred hand gently lifting the heavy platinum tiara from the marble pedestal.

He turned Maeve around to face him.

With slow, reverent grace, he placed the tiara upon her dark hair, the crimson ruby resting proudly against her brow like a crown of living fire.

“You were always the queen of this house, Maeve,” Matteo murmured, his dark eyes shining with an ocean of pure, eternal devotion. “Now the whole world knows it.”

He leaned down, bringing his lips to hers in a deep, tender kiss that sealed their victory forever beneath the warm Florida sun.
