Chapter 13 - Madeline’s Public Humiliation

Two weeks before our formal wedding celebration, an official court-ordered auction was held at the Minneapolis Municipal Convention Center to liquidate the seized assets of the Cross and Reeves estates.

Hundreds of socialites, antique collectors, and business executives gathered to bid on luxury sports cars, imported art collections, and high-end jewelry.

I attended the auction accompanied by Nathaniel and Arthur Henderson.

I wore a simple, elegant dark wool coat, my posture calm and dignified.

When the auctioneer brought out the final lot of the afternoon—the five-carat oval diamond engagement ring that Daniel Reeves had presented to Madeline Cross on the night of the gala—a hush fell over the room.

The auctioneer raised his gavel. “Starting bid for Lot 404: five hundred thousand dollars.”

Several investors glanced around, hesitant to bid on a jewel tainted by treason and attempted murder.

I raised my paddle calmly.

“One dollar,” I announced, my voice carrying clearly across the silent hall.

The room gasped in shock.

The auctioneer blinked, looking at Nathaniel Mercer standing tall behind my chair with an expression that brooked no argument.

“One dollar going once... going twice... sold to Chairman Clara Blackridge!” the auctioneer declared, banging his gavel.

The velvet box containing the diamond ring was brought to my seat.

I picked up the ring, turning the cold, glittering stone over in my fingers.

I walked over to the collection box for the Municipal Women’s Shelter positioned near the exit doors.

Without a second thought, I dropped the five-carat diamond ring straight into the charity slot.

“Use it to build warm beds for mothers who need shelter,” I told the stunned shelter volunteer.

The room erupted into spontaneous, appreciative applause as Nathaniel wrapped his arm around my waist, guiding me out into the crisp autumn sunshine.

The ring that had been used to humiliate me had just become a sanctuary for fifty families.
