Chapter 12 - A Sanctuary in the North WingBy late April, the transformation of our lives was complete.

The private master suite on the second floor of the Moretti fortress had become a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and light.
The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the sparkling blue waters of the Hudson River, while fresh bouquets of white hydrangeas and fragrant magnolias adorned every table.
Lily had enrolled in the prestigious early childhood academy on the Upper East Side, surrounded by friends who visited the fortress every Friday afternoon to build wooden birdhouses in the private gardens with Sal.
And every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, without fail, the long mahogany dining table was filled with family.
Don Salvatore Falcone would sit at the head of the table, laughing as he carved the prime rib, while Mrs. Gable brought platters of handmade pasta and warm sourdough bread from the kitchen.
One sunny Saturday afternoon in May, the air was warm and sweet, carrying the fresh scent of river water and blooming lilacs.
I walked along the stone terrace overlooking the water, wearing an ivory silk blouse and tailored dark trousers, my dark hair dancing in the breeze.
Lorenzo stood by the stone balustrade, wearing an open-collared navy linen shirt, watching the cargo freighters glide across the harbor channel.
When he heard my footsteps on the flagstones, he turned around.
His face lit up with that rare, breathtaking smile that always made my heart race.
He walked across the terrace to meet me, wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his solid, warm chest.
He buried his face into the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.
“Vanilla, clean rain, and sweet Earl Grey,” he murmured against my skin, sending a delicious shiver down my spine. “The only scent I ever want to come home to.”
I leaned back against his arm, smiling up into his soulful gray eyes.
“The foundation opened its fourth medical center in the Bronx this morning, Lorenzo,” I whispered.
“And the new container terminal opened without a single hour of delay,” Lorenzo smiled against my cheek. “All thanks to our Executive Trustee.”
“All thanks to a man who keeps his promises,” I replied, turning in his embrace to trace the rugged line of his jaw.
Lorenzo looked down at me, his expression shifting into a register of profound, breathtaking seriousness that made my pulse jump.
“Hannah,” he said softly.
“Yes, Lorenzo?”
May you like
He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his father, sliding the chain into my palm.
“Our family is whole, Hannah. The shadow has finally been lifted.”
