Chapter 7 - A Scent of Rain and Cold HearthBy midnight, the banquet salon had been cleared of guests and the grand fortress had entered a state of complete, peaceful transformation.

Federal marshals had formally executed the asset forfeiture warrants on the Castiglione shipping conglomerate, seizing their private luxury penthouses on Fifth Avenue, their commercial container vessels, and their offshore banking facilities.

Henri Castiglione was remanded without bail to the federal detention center in Otisville, facing consecutive life terms for murder-for-hire, interstate racketeering, and maritime terrorism.

Victoria Castiglione was transferred to the federal women’s correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, denied bail on felony conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate extortion charges carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of thirty-five years.

Back at the Moretti estate, the heavy, dark drapes that had kept the mansion cloaked in gloom for three years had been completely removed, replaced with airy cream linen curtains that let the winter moonlight flood every corridor.

In the master suite on the second floor, a massive fire of sweet applewood crackled in the limestone hearth, throwing waves of comforting warmth across hand-knotted Persian rugs and plush velvet armchairs.

Lily had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep in the center of the massive king-sized bed, clutching her new teddy bear against her chest, her breathing soft and rhythmic beneath a goose-down duvet.

I sat on the velvet sofa beside the fire, wearing a warm cashmere robe, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea that Mrs. Gable had prepared with a motherly smile.

My hands, which had scrubbed baseboards for sixteen dollars an hour twenty-four hours earlier, rested comfortably on my lap, free of lye soap, free of fear.

The double mahogany doors opened softly.

Lorenzo walked into the room.

He had removed his suit jacket and tie, wearing an unbuttoned black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up over his corded, scarred forearms.

He walked over to the bed with silent, reverent steps, looking down at my sleeping daughter.

With infinite gentleness, his large, calloused hand reached out, pulling the duvet smoothly over her small shoulders, before brushing a stray brown curl from her forehead.

He turned toward the fireplace, walking over to where I sat, sinking onto the leather ottoman opposite the sofa.

He reached into his pocket and produced a small, antique velvet jeweler’s box lined with white silk.

“How are you feeling, Hannah?” he asked softly, his gray eyes searching mine with profound, protective tenderness.

“I feel like I'm dreaming, Lorenzo,” I answered honestly, a faint smile touching my lips. “Yesterday morning, I was hiding my daughter behind an encyclopedia shelf, terrified that her giggles would get us killed. Now... fifty mob bosses are toasting her with vintage wine.”

Lorenzo let out a low, deep chuckle—a rich, beautiful sound that warmed every corner of the room.

“Lily didn't just save my life from that empty chair, Hannah,” he whispered, his baritone vibrating with unyielding sincerity. “She gave this house its soul back. She reminded me that an empire without someone to love is just an expensive mausoleum.”

He opened the velvet box.

Resting inside was not a commercial diamond purchased from a luxury catalog.

Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, five-carat oval-cut royal blue sapphire cradled by two delicate swallows carved from white gold—the ancient symbol of truth, loyalty, and safe return home.

“This belonged to my mother, Donna Maria Moretti,” Lorenzo said softly, lifting the cool ring from the velvet. “She told my father that an empire is built on the strength of the woman who guards the hearth.”

He took my left hand into his massive, warm palm, his thumb gently caressing my knuckles.

“Hannah Miller, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, Lily’s mother-protector, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my empire?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over my lashes, hot against my cheeks.

“Yes,” I choked out through my laughter, throwing my arms around his neck as he rose from the ottoman. “Yes, Lorenzo! A thousand times yes!”

Lorenzo swept me up into his arms, lifting me off the sofa, holding me tight against his solid, broad chest before bringing his lips down onto mine in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed our destiny forever beneath the warm firelight.

He slid the sapphire ring onto my finger.

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the chandeliers.
