Chapter 15 - The True Sovereign Donna of the Vance Fleet

Later that evening, after the grand feast had wound down into soft acoustic music, clinking crystal, and lively laughter, Julian and I stood together on the private master terrace of our oceanfront estate.
A gentle winter breeze rustled the sheer curtains behind us, carrying the clean, crisp scent of ocean salt and the distant twinkling lights of the harbor below.
Inside the softly lit salon, Arthur Vance was sitting by the fire, holding a sleeping Lily in his arms, softly singing that ancient lullaby as our little girl slept soundly against his chest.
Julian held me close, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, his chin resting gently against my hair.
My fingers traced the antique brass compass resting in my pocket, the polished metal catching the silver glow of the Atlantic moon.
“Are you cold, Chiara?” Julian whispered into my ear.
I leaned back against the broad, solid warmth of his chest, smiling up at the starlit sky, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against my shoulder.
I thought of the cold ballroom floor, the shattered crystal tumbler, the eight lines whispered beneath the grand piano, and the moment a man with slate-gray eyes had dropped his drink and asked who taught me the final stanza.
“Not anymore, Julian,” I whispered back, turning in his arms to cup his rugged face in my hands. “Tonight, the storm has finally left our sky.”
