Chapter 7 - A Scent of Ozone and Cold Felt

By 5:00 AM, the emergency restructuring of the Riviera buyout was finalized across three states.

Inside the federal executive building in Las Vegas, Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance formally unsealed the grand jury indictments against Bradley Shaw, Arthur Pendelton, and the six executives who had orchestrated the murder of Teresa Vance and the looting of the gaming reserves.

Bradley Shaw was denied bail and remanded to maximum security at the federal detention center in Henderson, facing consecutive life terms for interstate racketeering, securities fraud, and capital murder-for-hire.

The offshore accounts in Panama and Curacao were frozen by international court order, with one hundred and twenty million dollars in recovered assets transferred directly into the newly chartered Teresa Vance Foundation for Hospitality Workers.

The foundation immediately funded the complete restitution of the seven thousand Riviera workers' pension reserves, alongside full college scholarships and emergency healthcare subsidies for low-income service families across Nevada.

Back at the Bellagio, the private penthouse was quiet, bathed in the soft rose and gold light of the desert sunrise breaking over the mountains.

Elena sat on the leather sofa beside the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a warm cup of herbal tea that Mrs. Gable had prepared with a motherly smile.

Her sister, Maya, was sitting beside her, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater, eating warm cinnamon rolls, laughing through tears of disbelieving joy as she reviewed the deed to their brand-new four-bedroom home in Summerlin.

The double mahogany doors opened softly.

Damian Cross walked into the room.

He had showered and changed into an open-collared black cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed, powerful, and remarkably whole.

He walked straight to where Elena sat, sinking onto the leather ottoman opposite her.

He looked at Maya, then at Elena, his amber eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made Elena’s heart race.

“How are you feeling, Donna Elena?” Damian murmured softly.

Elena smiled—a radiant, breathtaking smile that lit up her hazel eyes, erasing four years of exhaustion and grief in a single heartbeat.

“I feel like the footnotes are finally closed, Damian,” she whispered back.

Damian reached into his pocket and produced an antique velvet jeweler’s box lined with white silk.

He didn't hesitate.

He dropped onto one knee on the Persian rug before her, opening the box with steady, reverent fingers.

Resting inside was not a commercial diamond bought from a retail catalog.

Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, six-carat cushion-cut blue sapphire cradled by two delicate swallows carved from white gold—the historic engagement ring of his mother, Donna Maria Cross, which had been locked in the family vault for twenty years, waiting for the woman who would bring honor back to their name.

“Elena Vance,” Damian said, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook her entire being.

“Four hours ago, you stepped between my pen and an empire, fighting through fear without ever losing your dignity. You were surrounded by wealth, arrogance, and ruthless deceit, yet you never let this world tarnish the pure gold of your spirit.”

He took her right hand into his massive, warm palm, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.

“You stood before six armed men and spoke the truth when everyone else was silent. You protected my family’s name, you avenged your mother’s blood, and you taught me what true partnership really means.”

He lifted the sapphire ring, holding it poised before her trembling finger.

“Elena Vance, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my empire?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Elena’s lashes, hot against her cheeks.

“Yes,” she choked out through her laughter, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Damian! A thousand times yes!”

Damian swept her up into his arms, lifting her off the rug, spinning her beneath the morning sunlight before bringing his lips down onto hers in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed their destiny forever.

He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger.

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the desert sun.

Maya cheered loudly from the sofa, waving her cinnamon roll in the air, while Marco and Mrs. Gable clapped with genuine, tearful joy from the doorway.
