Chapter 8 - The Interrogation of Bradley Shaw

At 10:00 AM, Damian and Elena arrived at the federal courthouse in downtown Las Vegas.

Hundreds of casino workers, cocktail servers, dishwashers, and union stewards lined the granite promenade outside the building, holding signs bearing Teresa Vance’s name, their voices rising in an eager, thunderous cheer as the black armored Maybach pulled up to the curb.

Damian stepped onto the pavement first, turning to offer his hand to Elena.

Elena stepped out into the crisp autumn morning, radiant in her dark-wool suit, the sapphire ring and the silver dice charm catching the blinding Nevada sun.

Damian offered her his arm, guiding her up the grand stone steps with slow, measured strides.

Standing at the top of the courthouse landing was Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance, holding a thick leather portfolio stamped with the golden seal of the Department of Justice.

“Don Damian, Donna Elena,” Prosecutor Vance greeted them with a respectful bow. “The grand jury returned true bills across ninety-six counts thirty minutes ago. The Riviera acquisition has been legally ratified under Elena’s revised terms. The four-hundred-and-sixty-million-dollar transaction is officially closed.”

He handed the portfolio directly to Elena.

“And this is the official decree from the State Gaming Control Board, naming you Chairperson of the Board of Overseers for the newly chartered Vance-Cross Gaming Consortium.”

Elena looked down at the parchment, her hands trembling with emotion.

“Thank you, Marcus.”
