Chapter 5 - The Perch Above the Sea

“Open the side door, Sylvie!” Dominic ordered.
“The wind will rip her apart!” I cried.
“She was trained by Gabriel,” Dominic said, his voice ringing with fierce pride.
“She knows what to do.”
I unlatched the heavy sliding door.
The freezing gale sucked the breath from my lungs.
Valkyrie spread her broad, scarred wings.
She didn't hesitate.
The war hawk launched herself into the storm.
She rode the upward thermal draft off the basalt cliffs.
A brown-and-gold streak against the black sky.
On the yacht’s deck, the mercenary was reloading the rocket tube.
Valkyrie folded her wings, diving at eighty miles per hour.
Her talons struck the shooter’s face with the force of an iron claw.
The man screamed, dropping the launcher over the railing.
He stumbled backward across the slick deck, clawing at his bleeding eyes.
Dominic brought the helicopter level with the yacht’s bridge.
He engaged the twin thirty-millimeter cannons mounted beneath the fuselage.
The heavy rounds tore through the yacht’s engine compartment.
Black smoke and steam erupted from the stern.
The yacht’s turbines seized with a deafening metallic screech.
The luxury vessel drifted helplessly toward the jagged black teeth of the
coastal reef.
Dominic set the helicopter down onto the forward helipad with a jarring thud.
He unbuckled his harness, drawing two combat blades from his tactical belt.
“Stay inside, Sylvie.”
“No,” I said, picking up a discarded shotgun from the floorboards.
“He threatened my sister.”
Dominic looked at me.

A slow, lethal smile touched his lips.
“Then let's finish it together.”
