Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Teresa Vale had not disappeared. She had been admitted under a different surname to a long-term care facility in Connecticut after a hit-and-run left her with limited mobility and patchy memories. Her daughter, Rosa, had spent two years trying to convince the authorities the collision was deliberate.

We found Rosa in a grocery store parking lot. She was furious that Dante had come in person. “Your people forgot my mother,” she said. “Now you remember her because you need something.”

I didn't defend him. I told her about the children and asked whether her mother wanted visitors. Rosa considered the question before agreeing to a meeting with her mother's attorney present.

Teresa was smaller than I expected. She wore a blue cardigan with a missing button. Her speech came slowly, but her memory of the laundry room was precise. She remembered a canvas bag, a ledger wrapped in oilcloth, and Marco arriving after midnight with a bleeding cut above his eyebrow.

“He told me there were payments from the Delacroix shipping company to men on his own security detail,” she said. “He wanted copies hidden somewhere no one would think to look.”

“Where?” I asked.

She tapped her chest. “Inside the winter coats. The ones for the charity auction.”

Back at the estate, we searched the archived donation records. The coats had gone to a women's shelter in Providence. I phoned its director myself. She remembered the donation because the coats were unusually expensive and one had a heavy stitched lining. The coat had been sold at a fundraiser the previous spring.

Dante looked exhausted. For the first time, he seemed less like the man who owned the house than a brother who had been late to understand his loss.

I placed a hand on the table between us. “We have a trail,” I said. “That's more than we had yesterday.”

The director called back at midnight. She had found the buyer's name. It was not a stranger. It was Dante's aunt, Rachel Caruso.
