Chapter 13 - The Replanting of the Mother's Grove

On a warm, golden morning in late spring, Dominic, Tonio, Clara, and I traveled to the southern slopes of the island—to the historic citrus grove where our journey had begun.

The morning sun bathed the terraced hillsides in brilliant amber light, the breeze carrying the sweet, intoxicating perfume of millions of white orange blossoms.

At the center of the grove stood the ancient, towering blood orange tree that Donna Isabella had planted with her own hands thirty-eight years ago.

Its massive branches were heavy with dark, glossy leaves and ripe, deep-crimson fruit.

Surrounding the ancient tree were two hundred brand-new saplings, carefully planted by Tonio and his apprentice gardeners, their roots drinking deeply from the crystal-clear waters of the restored mountain wellspring.

Tonio knelt beside the mother tree, holding the antique silver pruning shear.

He made a clean, diagonal cut across a healthy branch, selecting a perfect grafting bud.

He looked up at Dominic and me, his eyes crinkling with profound, joyful warmth.

“Come, Dominic. Come, Sylvie,” Tonio called out. “It is time to graft the future.”

Dominic and I knelt together in the rich, fragrant earth beside the old orchardist.

Tonio guided our hands as we made a precise incision in the bark of a young, vigorous sapling, inserting the bud from Isabella’s tree, binding it securely with soft cotton tape and beeswax.

“A graft takes three seasons to bear fruit,” Tonio said softly, his weathered hands resting over ours upon the soil. “The old root provides the strength, but the new bud brings the blossom. That is how a family survives the storms of this world.”

Dominic looked at me, his eyes shining with tears of quiet reverence.

“We will tend this grove together, Sylvie,” Dominic whispered, his fingers tangling with mine in the warm earth. “For our children, and our children’s children.”

“Always, Dominic,” I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder as the gentle Mediterranean breeze rustled the leaves of the mother tree above us.
