Chapter 15 - The New Donna of Chicago

Six months later, the historic Holy Name Cathedral in downtown Chicago rang out its ancient bells in a joyous, triumphant chorus that echoed across the skyscrapers and the lakefront.

It was our wedding day.

Over five hundred guests filled the towering stone cathedral—governors, international trade ambassadors, syndicate allies from five states, community leaders, and every member of the domestic staff from the Gold Coast estate, who occupied the front pews of honor.

Walking down the long marble aisle on the proud, steady arm of my recovered father, I wore an exquisite, hand-stitched ivory satin gown with a cathedral lace train that trailed twelve feet behind me.

Pinned above my heart was the antique silver thimble, and sparkling on my finger was the ancestral sapphire ring.

At the altar stood Luca Moretti.

He looked breathtakingly handsome in his bespoke black tuxedo, his posture radiating the majestic authority of an emperor, his dark eyes watching me approach with a look of awe and holy adoration so intense it made my heart overflow with gratitude.

Standing beside him as his best man was Matteo, sharp and proud in his formal suit.

And sitting in the seat of highest honor in the front pew, dressed in emerald-green velvet, was Donna Lucia Moretti, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief, smiling with radiant, holy pride.

When my father placed my hand into Luca’s, Luca leaned down, whispering against my ear with a voice thick with emotion:

“You are my home, Emma. Today, tomorrow, and for all eternity.”

“And you are mine, Luca,” I whispered back with a radiant smile.

We exchanged our sacred vows before Archbishop Marino, sealing our union with a kiss that brought the entire five hundred guests to their feet in a thunderous, standing ovation that shook the stained-glass windows of the cathedral.

That evening, the grand wedding reception at the Gold Coast mansion was a celebration unlike anything the city had ever witnessed.

There were no whispered betrayals, no concealed daggers, and no fear.

The forty crystal chandeliers glittered over a ballroom filled with glorious music, joyous laughter, clinking glasses, and the irresistible warmth of a family reborn.

Beneath the central chandelier, Luca and I shared our first dance as husband and wife to a sweeping Italian waltz played by a full orchestra.

He held me close against his chest, his strong hand warm and possessive on the small of my back, spinning me across the polished marble floor where, nine months earlier, a sewing box had fallen open.

“Are you happy, Donna Moretti?” Luca murmured, his lips brushing against my temple.

I looked up into the dark, loving eyes of the man who had torn down an empire of vipers to protect me and his mother.

“I have never been happier, Luca,” I smiled, resting my cheek against his lapel. “The housekeeper is gone. And our house is finally whole.”

Across the room, my sister was laughing with Matteo by the terrace doors, while Lucia danced with an elderly capo, surrounded by cheering guests.

We stood together in the brilliant light of our home, knowing that our foundation was built on truth, loyalty, and an unbreakable love that no syndicate, no bullet, and no storm could ever tear apart.

The maid had become the queen, the exiled mother had reclaimed her rightful throne, and the House of Moretti ruled with light, honor, and justice forever.
