Chapter 4 - The Offshore Register of Arthur VanceBy 11:30 PM, the grand dining hall had been cleared of the civilian guests under armed guard, their mobile phones confiscated and cataloged by Marcus’s cyber-intelligence operators.

The French Quarter estate was locked down under emergency syndicate admiralty.

Forty tactical commandos wearing dark charcoal wool coats and night-vision gear patrolled the perimeter walls, while three high-speed gunboats from Christian’s private fleet idled in the Mississippi River current outside the river gate.

Inside the private master study on the second floor, the air was warm, smelling of cedarwood, sterile saline, and the sharp, clean scent of eucalyptus oil.

I sat on the velvet chaise lounge beside the roaring limestone fireplace, wrapped in a floor-length dark-navy cashmere robe that Mrs. Gable—the senior housekeeper—had draped over my shoulders.

Dr. Elena Aris, the syndicate’s chief trauma surgeon, sat on a low stool behind me, carefully cleaning the six-inch laceration across my shoulder blade.

“Fourteen stitches, Don Christian,” Dr. Aris reported, her voice steady and professional as she tied off the surgical nylon. “The industrial bolt missed the scapula by three millimeters. It was dirty iron—I’ve administered a high-dose prophylactic cephalosporin and a tetanus booster. She will have a faint silver scar, but no functional deficit.”

Christian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his jacket off, his white dress shirtsleeves rolled to his elbows, watching the black water of the river.

He turned around slowly.

His amber eyes tracked the butterfly bandages across my brow, then settled on the white gauze taped across my back.

“Thank you, Elena,” Christian murmured softly. “Ensure her brother is transferred immediately.”

Dr. Aris nodded, snapping her medical kit shut. “The private transport arrived at the Ochsner Clinic thirty minutes ago. Her brother, Leo, has been relocated to the VIP surgical recovery suite at the Vance Medical Institute. His dialysis protocol has been upgraded to nocturnal hemodiafiltration under the direct supervision of the department chair. His account is permanently zeroed.”

Tears of pure, overwhelming relief spilled hot and fast down my cheeks, burning against my split lip.

I pressed my trembling hands against the soft wool of the robe, sobbing so hard my shoulders shook.

“Mr. Vance... Christian...” I wept, my voice cracking down the middle. “My brother... his machine... you moved him?”

Christian walked across the Persian rug with long, silent strides.

He sat on the leather ottoman directly in front of the chaise lounge, his broad frame leaning forward until his amber eyes were level with mine.

He reached out with his large, warm hand, his calloused thumb gently wiping away a tear from my bruised cheekbone with breathtaking gentleness.

“Leo is safe, Elena,” Christian whispered, his baritone rumbling with an unshakeable, eternal gravity. “No one will ever pull a plug on your family. No one will ever threaten your shelter again.”

He reached into his breast pocket and produced an antique leather portfolio stamped with the golden seal of the Port of New Orleans.

He laid it flat on my lap.

“What is this, Christian?” I asked, my breath catching in my throat.

“The canceled lease for your apartment on Royal Street,” Christian answered softly. “Along with the master title deed to the historic Gardere mansion on Esplanade Avenue, paid in full in perpetuity. And an irrevocable ten-million-dollar medical trust established in your brother's name.”

My breath died in my lungs.

May you like

“Ten million dollars? Christian... I am an hourly banquet maid! I spilled your wine on the floor!”

“You carried a military surveillance bug out of a cellar while your flesh was torn open, Elena,” Christian murmured, his thumb tracing the curve of my jaw with an intensity that made my pulse race like an uncoiling spring. “You stood before twenty-eight men and handed me the truth when my own fiancée had sold my life for forty pieces of silver. In my world, that kind of courage is answered with an empire.”
